View Full Version : Clutch and Gearbox

My clutch is showing signs of slowly starting to go, noisy bearings and slight smell once in a while (no slipping or anything and still engages well even on standing starts). I do have a few questions about doing a full re-con of the gearbox and clutch.

I am thinking if I'm going to do this I will install an AP Racing clutch and lightened flywheel but like I said have few questions as I know the BRM has quite a different gearbox to other Rover 200's

Has anyone every stripped down a gearbox at all? My fear is perhaps the garage may mess up the Torsen LSD or change something incorrectly. If changing the clutch would they ever need to go near the Torsen?

I will obviously change the gearbox oil and find out what bearings are going (noise is present when the clutch is not engage, when engaged they are silent).

What parts are BRM specific, I take it the cogs ratios are different and would the driveshafts be different due to the torsen?

Lots of questions but hopefully you guys can give some advice :beer2:

Not yet

Nope, I've vhanged clutches and they don't have to go near it at all.

Ratios are different to other Rovers, driveshafts are same as the R200 VI items.

There are actually 2 types of Torsen diff, A and B. I can't remember off the top of my head which the BRM has.

Thanks Adam, I think the Torsen is a Type B. The earlier turbos used the type A.

I believe the K series Lotus Elise 111s has the same ratios but doubt they would be an easier to souce than BRM originals. I suppose ZR 160 and 200VIs could be used if needed?

This may be a bit late for you, but there was a BRM box for sale on XPF and there's some interesting comments in the thread about the differentials which you may find useful . . . . .(or not!:))

You are welcome - I've quickly searched (without success) .org for a post by MGJohn on the subject of stripping down and rebuilding PG1's, I'm pretty sure that's where I've seen a reasonably good account (with pics) of this type of work - I believe he frequents rovetech nowadays - he's a fella who seems to 'do things properly' when putting problems to bed - which has included PG1 boxes with LSD's on some of the number of 600 ti's he's given attention to.

Must try harder! :)

Im sure there are many posts on gearboxes and rebuilds..

That makes sense.

He's looked after a fair few 600 ti's, but I think his pride and joy are his montegos (if he's still got more than one)
