This is no help to you, but I've not had trouble with any of our Rover's alternators yet. 245,000 miles between three cars - the others have been lower mileages.

Our BRM's alternator was making a funny noise when I started it after a long spell being parked up, but soon quietened down. I need to remove it and take it to bits, see if there's some lubrication or fettling to be done.

That's all I'm hoping my problem is - I had a very similar problem with our old washing machine motor. Cleaned up and oiled - went for another two years, caught it just in time.

Is that a new new one or a recon unit.

Either way - if it's £70 for a replacement unit with a warranty, it's not too bad a deal if the one you've got is FUBAR'd

You're right though - there definitely is always something.

i was lucky and picked up a decent second hand one from ebay , 70quid for a new one is a good price..

good job mate , mine was working fine after a good clean ,when you retention the belt dont over tighten it otherwise it will add excess strain to the already worn bearing .

I've just refitted the battery tray in mine (up on axlestands) and fired it up only to hear almighty squealing form the engine bay. I knew there wasn't a pig in there and guessed it was the alternator - I was right.

I've got a pretty good idea what I'm doing tomorrow. Another coat of paint to the front calipers and getting familiar with the "BRM alternator removal procedure" a few of us are getting familiar with this year :)

Managed to take it off tonight. Socket, ratchet, plenty of WD40 and lots of turning. I would have disassembled, but there's four or five cracks in different parts of the castings, I think it'd fall to bits. It's going back on, but I don't know how long it'll last.

I hope yours is in better nick than mine Taffy02.
