View Full Version : Exhaust bolts and studs

I'm replacing the exhaust and have some 'issues' :) with studs / bolts. I've had one shear between the manifold and 2>1 section (with the bracket back to the engine) and two of the studs fixing the manifold to the head have the nut seized on - I'm intending to use mole grips / bench vice / spanner / socket after a good long soak in a release oil.

If anyone's had any issues with this type of thing, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction for methods / parts.

In the meantime I'll try to resist the temptation to get a hammer out:smile2:

Thanks,

Gary.

try loctie freeze and release , or the old oxy cetaline bottles !! (excuse the spelling!)you could always hammer on a smaller size hex socket and see if it releases that way?!?!?

Thanks for the advice Matty.

I haven't got access to the old 'hot spanner' ;) :(

Haven't heard of the loctite product - will have to look out for that in future.

. . . . . and already got the hammer out :D

Once using a 9/16" socket on a 15mm nut -as you suggested, and once after drilling through the single snapped stud between the manifold and the 2>1 section before eventually wrapping molegrips around it.

I am now short of a couple of studs (all to the head OK). Does anyone have any thoughts on why I wouldn't be able to use a standard M10 bolt instead?

Thanks,

Gary.

As long as it 'does what it says on the tin' and keeps the manifold attached - 'functional' is good :)

Don't keep it to yourself either taffy02 - I may well need to go down the 'not pretty' route myself, but I will try hard to avoid it.
