Filter Box de-restriction?

While I had my air filter box off last night (to fit my 52mm TB!!! :smile2::smile2:) I noticed a plastic pipe going into it - is there any benefit or detrimental effect to removing this? - if indeed it is possible with out butchering it.

I ask because I had a Mk4 Astra Sport a few years ago and it was a poplular thing to take a similar pipe out of that filter box in the belief that it aided air flow.

could be the baffle pipe,just a noise reducer i took it out of mine with no bad affects..
