My brm has started struggling at top end range. It revs to 5500 rpm slowly and will go no further ther is also a lot more induction noise than usual from a k&n panel filter. Any body any ideas of what could be causing this fault ?

Firstly check all of the connectors to the Hydraulic Control Unit (piece of metal on left hand side of back of top of engine). 3 connectors should be attached, make sure they are and all clean, etc.

The connectors are all there but i will check if they are clean. My mate has been round with an engine diagnostic reader and it says there is an ambient air flow sensor reading of -213 degrees could this cause the problem ?

My colleague has a Rover 25 GTi, and it seemed like the VVC stopped working. It turns out that the oil level was near the bottom mark on the dipstick. He topped it up to the top mark on the dipstick and the VVC started working again.

As Adam said, check the HCU Solenoid connectors.

Should look like this.
Normally this problem occurs when they have been plugged in the wrong way round after a HG change etc. Make sure they are all clean with no split wires etc.

Thanks for your help guys I will check the connectors.

I have had no headwork done so it may possibly be dirt in the connectors.

Your picture has not shown ne chance you could try to upload it again it would be much appreciated.
