View Full Version : Bottom end

Just a quick question, showing my ignorance of the K series engine!
I have at least one small-end bearing which is about to give up the ghost! (Or so I'm told! Rattling noise at small throttle opening when engine is warm and between 3000 and 4000 RPM, noise goes when throttle hard down or fully up).
In the past I have managed to replace the bottom end of a couple of different cars by removing the sump and removing/replacing crank/rods/pistons from below, thereby saving on time and cost of removing the head and replacing all gaskets etc (which has already been done a couple of months ago). Can this be done with the K series?
This could mean the difference between keeping or scrapping the car!

easiest way is head off - sump off and take the piston/liner out from the top mate.
i have a complete bottom end spare if needed
As Cosworth said, you can't do it with the head still in place. Head bolts connect to the oil ladder. Also be aware that if you're removing the pistons you MUST clamp the liners or you'll end up in a whole world of problems.

OK, thanks to Cosworth  I've got a new bottom end coming next week.
So that I can get everything stripped apart and re-installed in the correct sequence, and tighten everything up to the correct torque, can anyone recommend the best workshop manual(s) for the car and the engine?

Your best bet for the workshop manual would be through E-bay where you can buy a cd with all the info you need, i think its called RAVE. A friend ov mine got this through ebay and covers majority of rover models.
or maybe a Haynes manual but to get one to cover the vvc engine is quite difficult to get hold ov.

She's running right again!!!! :hooray:
Cheers Cosworth for the bottom end! :beer2:
Running fine now, pulls like a train up to 7K RPM, no rattles, no smoke, no oil/water interface! :)
Now to give her a real spring clean and sell her! :(
