View Full Version : bigger brakes
i was planning a brake upgrade and was wondering whether the ap brake setup off the mg tf 160 would fit a brm. i think the discs are 304mm.
or should i just get the zr 160 discs and pads! i know that the tf 160 ap brakes have bigger calipers but am i right in thinking that the zr 160 uses the same calipers as the brm? any advice or views on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Go for ZS 180 discs and Rover 600 Ti Calipers.. less hassle and much less price
is that all i need? will the rest of the stuff on my brm still be fine to use with these? i was looking at 620 ti calipers on ebay and contacted a few people who were breaking 620 ti's but had no luck. i will have to keep my eye out
are the zs 180 discs not the same as zr 160 ones
The TF AP Racing brakes wont fit unfortunately. Too big to fit behind the wheels and mount in different places.
i am now looking for zr 160 discs which are 282mm. i am also goin to try an get some 620 ti calipers and some red stuff pads. will all these fit and is there anything else i need?
i know someone who is selling some 620ti calipers, they have told me to make them an offer how much would you suggest?
i am then goin to get some zr 160 discs. should i upgrade all four or just do the front. not sure how the brakes work are the back brakes just as important?
I forget the brake bias, but rears aren't really as important as the fronts as the fronts do the majority of the braking. 620 calipers are a good bet, a lot larger than the standard BRM.
how much should i be looking at paying for 620ti calipers? shall i just get the front ones or all four?
Cant remember if anything needs changing for the rears.....
I'd probably look to pay about £80 for fronts, although that might be a bit optimistic.
been offered them for £35 each + postage.
I got very interested in this mod and fancy a try...
I got some 282mm calipers from from a friend who had a 620Ti as a donor car, he's putting the turbo lump in his ZR, but that a another story!
i'll be getting some ZS180 black dimond discs next month when i can afford them
I read somewhere that some grinding is required to the calpiers as the 620's discs are 23mm and the ZS180 & ZR160 discs are 25mm
Anyone how anything about this?
Keep us updated on how you get on elf
Yeah, IIRC part of the caliper does need grinding away. Cant remember exactly where but a test fit should show you.

don't forget the uprated master brake cilinder from the zr. I think this will make most of the difference
I have fitted zr 160 brakes in the front, but not a big difference. will try the black diamond discs after the standard things
this thing about grinding has put me right off. looks like it is just the bigger discs and better pads!

To fit the 620TI calipers you need to grind a few mm off the pad carrier to allow it to clear the ZR160 disc.
The MGTF 160 brakes will not fit, the discs are 4x92.5 and the caliper mounts differently.

Hello,
Just got some 620 Ti Calipers + Carriers. So do I need the ZR160 282 mm discs? Will they just bolt striaght on? I know that the carriers need to be machined away by a couple of mm but is that it? Would you swap the front for the rear discs now that I am upgrading the front ones, would that work or would you leave them standard?

Hi Guys,
Just to let you know my 620 ti brake conversion is now complete!!:smile2:
I left the rear ones as standard, well grooved with green stuff pads. For the fronts used ZR grooved discs, 620ti red stuff pads and obviously 620ti calipers + carriers. Everything was as everyone said so all in all a very cheap and easy upgrade. I can honestly say it makes so much difference, the car stops so quickly compared to before, put a smile on my face when I went for a test. Would recommend this to anyone who wants more stopping power. The best part of it all is that for all of the parts including the calipers the total cost was £175 what a bargain.:beer2:
