I'm curious to know what the differences are between the Rover BRM and the MG ZR 160. I know that they're both based on the same Rover 200, but what are the differences under the hood that give the MG that extra power ?

52mm TB in stead of 48mm, other exhaust, other injectors, other ecu and some headwork.

Cam profiles, ecu and injectors are all the differences (inc throttle body) IIRC

I would love to give my BRM a bit more power. What's the best (read 'cheapest') route to a faster BRM ?

I also wondered how these type of modification affect insurance ? Do you have to pay a lot more to insure a modified BRM ?

First mods i'd go for are the 52mm throttle body and a decent panel filter, probably around £180 altogether. You wont see amazing gains but its the best starting point.

go for a ITG panel filter

i put one in my rover 214 and it made a difference, i know its not a BRM but still

mg zr 160 only 5mph faster top end but slower on acceleration brm's are still better

zr 160 is missing a torsen, this to some is a pointless addition, but I certainly noticed it when I moved from a 1.4 25 to the BRM.

Some people say the torsen doesn't do anything. Personally i agree with you Jon, when pushing the BRM into the twisties it alloys for a lot more power to be put down onto the road than my standard 200 ever did.

A common misconception is that the VI is quicker in first gear, the inside wheel will spin easier when, for example accelerating while turning out of a junction.

This doesn't happen on the BRM (as much) but this is down to the torsen. I test drove a Rover 25 GTI and have to say the BRM is much better when cornering.

I haven't driven a ZR 160 so cannot comment on that so only going on how the 25 GTI drove.
