View Full Version : Coilover tales

Well started fitting them today. All went well with one side at the front, but the passenger side stopped progress dead. For some reason the cutout in the strut wasn't quite in the right place.

After much swearing, cursing and head bashing it was all taken out and the cutout made a wee bit bigger and voila! The fronts were in!

The rears went very straightforwardly (if that's a word) and were in place in no time at all, although it was about 5pm by this time. Dropped the car down from the lift and it honestly looked as though it'd bottomed out completely. The "helper" coil (as KW call it) on the fronts was squished flat and it didn't look quite right, so a frantic search of KW's phone number was in order. After various assurances that this is ok I decided to go for a test drive but didn't even manage to leave the units before a god awful clonking sound came from the rear :slap:

Back up on the lift it looks as though a part of the old suspension was required but not mentioned in the instructions, so it was off with the rears again (I now know you can remove them easily without removing the wheels at all :D ). The offending part was put on and everything done up again for test drive number 2!

Guess what, it still clonks :slap: Being past 7 by this time decided to call it a day and re-visit it early tomorrow. Think some new custom bearings will be made up to eliminate the rattle and then its testing time to find the perfect height for some cornering fun.

More to follow later.........

Sorry I haven't updated this thread...

They've been on about 3 weeks now and all I can say is WOW!!! Still have a small problem with them knocking, but going to fit some more spacers to firm them up. Not sure why they're like this as they shouldn't be, but i'll sort it.

As for cornering its fantastic. I can push so much harder through a turn and there's no body roll at all. Over bumps they're firm, but not crashy. The cornering speeds are amazing now.

My Dad drove her home the other day and having raced in the past and being a mechanic he knows his stuff. In his words he went round a roundabout on the route home faster than any other car he's ever driven and was genuinely amazed by how good they are. Best £600 i've ever spent :D:D:D

I haven't slammed it silly low, just put them to a height so they dont flop about when the car is up on the lift. There are some pics from the Executive Motoring Services open day beside Gary's car that's standard.

There was a set on ebay at the weekend... I missed out on them by a fiver... Wasn't a very happy bunny.

Something about £600 makes me slightly faint though...

What did you have before? Standard or upgraded?

I had it lowered on ZR Avo lowering springs (for sale) on the standard shocks. The coilovers are in a different class completely though!

I did almost cry when I paid for them.

aha, finally

strange story with that "cloink". do you know where the sound come from??
is the cornering really that amazing??
how about the ride quality? does the car sqeaks even more? are your teeth trough your lip??

need ... more ... info

otherwise I gonna have to wait till I have news from leda

Still no idea about the "clonking", i've had to make up 4 metal spacers to keep it all rigid and eliminate the noise. Don't know if I fitted them wrong, suffice to say I followed all the instructions to the letter.

Ride quality is good, firm but not harsh. Much better than the lowering springs I had before which were quite "crashy". No teeth through lips, no squeaking, just fantastic cornering.

As to the cornering, i've suprised so many cars since I've had them fitted. Had a little blast with a tuned ZR160 the other day, I left him in the twisties. Truly fantastic, it reminds me so much of my old mini now :D

Ah, forgot about this. Sorted the clonking in the end, turned out we'd put one of the rubber bushes on the wrong side of the holding cup.

Am now running with no noise and fantastic cornering ability :D

lucky *******

I have the Idea that the fiesta st from my mate corners as good as the brm (some corners better, some worse) And because the fiesta is a bit faster (0.2 sec or something like that) I need some mods...

Well I'd certainly give any ST driver that wanted to a little race around a track. I actually read a post (forget where but it was on a Fiesta forum) when someone offered to put a BRM up against a Fiesta ST and would even pay for his track time and had no-takers whatsoever

Didnt you say your coilovers cost 800+ Adam?

If so are these a bargin?

coilover bargin? (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250186655761&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015)

Nah, both the KW's and the Gaz i've bought cost around the £700 mark. The KW's generally cost more than Gaz but to be honest I cannot fault them in the slightest.

THe Gaz I don't know about yet as they're not on the other car as yet. I opted for the Gaz GGA Golds though which are the proper race spec set-up with huuuuuuuge 22mm pistons on the fronts, they're proper beasts I tell thee!

Ah, fair enough.

*Me hopes to win the lottery at the weekend, not the whole lottery, just a couple of grand!!*

i had a go against my m8 in his Fiesta ST down near sevenoaks - and i have to say i had the legs on him. :D
My car is standard apart from the janspeed system! I reckon it would be interesting on a track coz the BRM is about 100kg lighter than the ST.
Having seen your BRM adam, coilovers are firmly on the shopping list ;)
