I'm thinking of going the lazy ice route and plonking some 6x9's on my parcel shelf, does anyone have any recommendations where to buy a cheap yet relativley decent set?

Pardon my ignorance but what are 6x9's??
I'd guess from the parcel shelf bit you mean speakers?

dont do it man!! get some larger front speakers and leave the rears as is. or get yourself a stealth shelf (expensive but good) and this enables you to mount shelf speakers but they are hidden under a thin sheet of vinyl.

even though 6x9's are good they require an equally good shelf to support them which as si said ideally a stealth shelf or make up your own..ive got two pioneer 8-inch 3-ways on a home made custom stealth shelf and they sound awesome!! its like having the bass of two 8-inch subs without the inconvenience of a clumsy bass box...thats the route to go if you want mega sounds!!lol

TBH I made a shelf for my old Clio so could be convinced to do it again for the BRM - add a little leather from a rear seat cover ........
Thanks Matty! another project to add to the list!

no worries ....i used the original shelf and cut the middle section out and replaced it with a mdf section with pre-cut holes for the 8-inchers....then trimmed it with proper acoustic speaker cloth...easy peasy..

Does the original shelf hold the mdf ok without sagging?

Look at some of the Pioneer, Fusion or Kenwood entry level stuff.
Personally i would save some cash, get a great set of front end speakers and an active (pre amped) sub. You could get the lot for a shade over £200 notes and have afar better sounding system.
6X9's will be wasted as 50% of their sound is lost to road noise and rattles around the boot..
Like i said IMO

Thanks Dan, I'm not looking for anything serious just something that can handle fidget at a reasonable level with out sounding like a bag of spanners :D

Yeah you can get some nice Pioneer front speakers with seperate tweeters for about 70 a pair. Means you got to have a tweeter mounted on your dash, but the sound is much better!

The best systems I've heard have all used front seperates with a decent cross over, mid size rears just for a bit of fill and a small but punchy sub - because lets be honest, "thumpin wikkid bass blud" is only for 17 years olds.
I have been in cars with 6x9's but they always sounded like such a halfway house.
I just don't bother with sound systems in my cars anymore, it's not where I go to "listen" to music, it's really just a method to drown out the road noise.

I'm no trimmer but this lifts the sound stage of the music to well, your ears!

'ICE' really isn't my thing, but I'm told that sonofsnail's BRM has a pair of active 6" x 9" speakers in the parcel shelf. I'm presuming battery powered mini amps in th elittle plastic box next to each speaker. (I hope this doesn't sound like bollox - I'm not sure of the details)
Real world - it does give a deeper, richer sound.

I threw a 10" sub in the boot (£20 on e bay) a Sony Amp (£15 on ebay) a lexus wiring kit several pounds (Guess where) and a phono plug (few quid) for quickly removing sub when the boots needed. The amps mounted to the side of the boot with a self made board covered in the same boot material, nicked from my old coupe boot, needs tidying but take some pics when happy with it all (bloody fairweather D.I.Y.er that I am) Got to say I always go for a sub of some sorts these days even on my budget of (not much) as the fill of bass in the car is just much better and can always be tweeked on the head unit and amp so you dont sound like a teenager trying to destroy his hearing
