The other day I noticed "a bit of" a problem with the hinges of the boot of my Dutch BRM.

The righthand side one seems to be corroded quit a bit. (see pics) Left hand side is corroded as well but not as bad.

in real life it looks much worse than on the pics.

A few years ago I had some work done on it as it started to rust then and they did the most they could without any structural work, mostly taking away the rust on the surface and drilling holes to inject some rust inhibitor and protection.

It now looks as if structural work is imminent within a short time.

This could well mean the end of the car as this will be costly to have it done, as I see it: remove interior, remove original beam, weld new beam, paint & put interior back in the car.

I know of some cars who had the hinges welded to the beam for extra reinforcement early in their life before rust really was a problem, That's not possible here anymore as the rust has already gotten too far.

Anybody got any suggestions??

Not much response here ;-(

A friend of mine suggested to use Caprotech RX-5 to inhibit the rust and seal the metal from oxidation.
Here is a link: http://www.antirust.co.uk/

It seems good stuff but then again: I never saw a manufacturers website who didn't say the highest of themselves.
Anybody got any experience with this stuff?

I think the low response might be because thats a bit of a hard one.Iam looking at the pics and thinking, that boots gonna have come off the headlining out the way and a welder putting in dome sort of plating, maybe some of the same pieces cut from any other 200 in the scrappy with a good solid beam.

I think any rust cure thats that good would be like a cure for cancer.

My sympathy for this problem all you can do is keep it rubbed down rust treated and painted until it just wont hold anymore, then decide how far your willing to go at putting it right

I do agree that at some point it will need to have some surgery done to...but for the moment: A: I can't take the car of the road as I need it, B: I can't afford another car, C: I need to find the time & the opportunity to fix it.
So I am trying to keep the damage limited for now and fix it when I have the opportunity to take the car of the road. There are more points to adress then as well, probably will come down to stripping the car and restoring the whole shell.

Should be a nice project.
