Its been bugging me for a while now,the passenger side of the car is already in need of a lot of work due to a scratch running from front to rear of the car and a dented/rusty rear wing...Ok i took it on when i bought her but other little things like a bodged on piece of vinyl on the outer door pillar irritate me more.

Armed with a stanley knife and some long finger nails I set about removing it only to find it was one piece of vinyl stuck straight over the old one...no wonder it was coming unstuck.

After about half an hour of tugging pulling and getting annoyed it was gone just like my fingernails, but somehow i managed not to ruin the paintwork underneath

This left me the remaining glue (which as it was all i had around) was soaked carefully with white spirit and with a bit more elbow greese came away

Lastly to clean things up and not wanting to add polish or wax to a surface I may be sticking a new piece of vinyl to,I went over the surface gently with a bit of rubbing compound

Now originally I was going to ask what the hell did they stick to the door pillar, some sort of vinyl...sticky back plastic from Blue Peter...Fablon and whats best to buy.but now Iam thinking does it look better without it and should i pull off the other side ???

Is it still the same color as the paint on the rest of the car???

I would leave it for a few days and let yourself get used to the looks, decide what to do later.

I would like to see a pic from the whole side of the car though, see what it looks like myself.

Yes it is the same colour and i must say doesnt come away easy,so confidence in removing the other side is needed

I avoided the whole side pic due to the damaged rear but will go and do one now as you would like to see it

It didn't even occur to me that the black on the pillar was vinyl!!

I prefer it black.

What damaged rear?

I don't know yet....I like it without but I can see why they have put it on: to make the windows look one so a bit more flowing.
As the green is kinda dark the difference isn't immediately obvious.

Mine are still ok but if they would be really tacky I would take them off and wouldn't replace them.
Getting them might a pain and then fitting them nice might even be bigger problem as probably you only will have one go.

Looking at your comparison photo's they do actually look pretty good in green.

I think I'd prefer to have them in a really glossy black to help blend in with the windows.

Yes the photos are kind the whole rear panel is bent in and there is a large chunk of rust where the arch got caught against a wall ? by the last owner you will see it when i start the repair and uploads a few pics.At the moment ive touched everything in to hide it a bit.Think Ill take your first advise and live with it for a week, also getting the material I need when Iam not sure what it is makes it difficult

Yes I did think along those lines maybe take off the other side and use some gloss black fablon or even paint

I did this on my British Racing Green MG Maestro 2.0i - had all the window frames and the upper sections of the B and C pillars resprayed in a gloss black. It really set the whole thing off nicely and only needed a coat of a non-abrasive polish once a year. However, not sure about on the Rover BRM as the window frame is an integral part of the main panel pressing. You would need to be very thorough on the masking of the top and bottom edges to ensure it has an integrated appearance. However, a similar effect looks good on modern Jaguar S Types and something called a Volkswagen Golf.
