MOT out of the way Iam starting to look at a few cheap ways to subtly enhance the car, using only parts that can be swapped back again,I have my eye on a zr rear spoiler,if I get it at the right price and have just purchased a front grill.
My intention is to de orange the front lights and paint in some Brookland green then remove the centre from the grill and paint it Brookland green leaving the mesh as it is.
Anyone any thoughts on this :pimp:

You're changing the chrome grill to brooklands? i'd be interested to see how it turned out.
You should make a mock up on photoshop!

I'm planning on silver for my grill, would be interested in seeing how brooklands green turns out. How do you go about de-oranging the lights? Its something I was condsidering, but wrote off, because it seemed quite a lot of effort. lol

From what ive read,Its not easy, you need to heat the inside and peel of the orange lenses theres a thread on here somewhere, apparently you`ll cut your fingers and spend ages getting all the glue off.
With the grill I will post pics when done and can always respray if I dont like it

One thing wheres best place to get some decent mesh

Halfraud's, look in the Ripspeed section for their 'Competition Mesh', it's almost identical to the normal BRM mesh.
Sparkle silver is the way forward for the upper grills though :mml: I'm sorely tempted to get an open mouth one like Ian's though

It's the top grill you're doing isn't it?
I think there needs to be some silver on the front to 'balance' the rest of the Sparkle trim, will be interesting to see though!
I remember there was a chap that repainted the 'snout' with only the very outer edge in orange and the inside in green. Looked quite funky.

Well today looked rainey so I took a hacksaw and a grinder to a perfectly good grill.
armed with some rough sanding paper I took the shine away from the chrome and filled the holes with some P45 and metal strips, left it in the workshop for Tuesday when I will smooth it down and start applying some thick primer coats

A quick pick compiled from my phone (forgive quality).
As its decided to rain I set about the grill, hack sawed of the centre badge then finished with a grinder.
Now I dont like fibreglass,Ill rash all over,so its was some aluminium strips bedded on P45,dry,more filler, once dryed a sheet of ruff paper to rub down and take all the shine of the chrome.I have heard of people removing the chrome with a lot of effort not me,time will tell if Iam wrong.
Next up spray putty, flattend, more filler to get the shape back on the lower lip where the main centre piece once was, more flatting this time with 600 grade.grey primer, flatting and finishing of with 1500 grade wet and dry.
Last before I went home tonight a couple coats of green top coat and bar a couple of small blemishes too sort out its nearly done.

Ive bought some really cheap mesh just so I can play with colouring that too,but if I like it when its done Ill buy the ripspeed mesh, and if I decide I dont like it on E Bay its goes in primer

I did an open mouth grill not so long ago.
But in a fit of rage I threw something which hit it and damaged it. Whilst still in rage mode i picked it up, threw it on the floor then trod on it.
I now regret doing it!!!

Haha can imagine how easily it broke,I lent down on mine while getting the shine off the chrome and suddenly heard crack, right across the filler line on the bottom hole, had to gouge it out and fill again, thinking of glueing some blocks in the back to strenthen it

Messing around this afternoon as my paint had not arrived in the post,I had bought some cheap mesh to play around with, having let my grill dry over the weekend and I must say Renault Brookland green from Halfords is not that far off,a little light but that was without any lacquer,I decided to draw around the inner edge of the grill onto a block of wood and the cut it to give me something to form the mesh round without damaging the back lip of my freshly painted grill.
The mesh I want to use is around 25 quid and I want to use the cheap stuff to play with coloring it and being able to show you it as I chop and change,in the hope that others of you wanting to do this little mod can grab some ideas.

GRRRR a step backward,I received two tins of Brookland green from a seller on e bay, genuine rover stuff, but perhaps stuck on a shelf for too long, the first tin came out in large blobs and the second despite nearly shaking it to destruction decided to spray ok for a couple of strokes before doing the same, this left me with a grill covered in large green blobs.
Its ok though I havent thrown anything yet.
The only upside the seller apologised and is sending me a refund,so I suppose I have 2 tins of touch up paint

Halfords sell Rover Brooklands green premixed out of rattle cans.
Would that not be good enough for something as small as a grill?

If they've got it, it should be out on that rack with all the other cans.
I looked on Sunday while i was buying a replacement ratchet for the one i kicked to death!
WARNING!!!!
The Halfrauds off the shelf Brooklands Green is NOT the same colour as our cars, it's much lighter! You have to get it mixed from Halfrauds.

Think I'm going to start butchering my grill soon :D
What did you use to fix the badge on yours Ian?
welshone
05-11-2010, 08:23 PM
used super super super glue from halfrauds
It's actually stuck to a nut and the nut is stuck to the rear plastic plate on the rear of the grill. I've done this to give it a suspended look.
Still stuck solid so far. :D

Well this morning It was back to the start nearly, only I can turn a little grill into a epic story (must be some sort of weird skill their),overnight despite rubbing most of the bad spray off and giving it a couple more coats of the Renault paint there was a large reaction between the paints and the whole thing looks a mess, fortunately not cracked,so a few heavy coats of primer have gone on to see if I can work it down to the nice smooth finish I already had before :(

Hi.
You have mentioned Halfords pre mixing rattle cans, do you just give them the Rover paint code, or do you have to take a sample? How good do you think they can do Silver Sparkle MNH? I need to redo my door mirrors.
