Well took the car in today for MOT and service and have been told that the front left hand shock has "exploded". Kwik-fit has quote £486 for replacement because they said they can only find one person that supplies them. Needless to say I thought this was a bit much.

What shocks can be used on the BRM that aren't going to cost almost more than the car is worth? I thought you could use the vi shocks on it but kwik-fit told me you couldn't. There has to be a better solution.

Basically I'm without a car until I can get this sorted and if I have to pay £500 for it then I will just scrap the bloody thing and have to get the bus (this car has cost me SO much since I got it I just really had enough.

Unfortunately the BRM shocks aren't the same as any of the rest of the MG-Rover range.

Front shocks new from Rimmer Bros:

1800 cc - K Series - Manual - Petrol - BRM Badge
Part number - RND105220
Available to Order. Usually ships in 2-3 working days. £130.09 ex VAT
£152.86 inc VAT

Thanks a lot mate! That's a lot better then £500! Sorry for another question but can I just change the one front strut with one of these or should both be replaced?

Also when I picked up the car I got told that both headlights are out (one too high and one too low) and that one of them needs replacing :( guessing that any of the bubble shape 200 headlights will fit though as long as I get ones that are suitable for the electric adjustment?

It is generally recommended to change in pairs but you don't have to.

Yes any electric bubble shape 200 headlight will fit.

If you want new Monroe Shock Absorbers on page 280 list a front set for the 200vi / BRM, bit odd I know as the BRM had a lower ride height than the VI, but they are new & should be cheaper than the genuine ones

http://www.taec.nl/pdfonline/MONROE080519.pdf

Here you go - Ebay a 2 for 1 deal when compared to the originals

Hope this helps

Its the spring that sets the ride height not the shocker.

Thanks! I looked at these but wasnt sure they would fit. When I phoned them up the guy on the phone didnt sound too positive.

I ordered one from rimmer bros a week ago. Phoned today to see what the status was and was told that their supplier has discontinued them and they cant get them in. Would have been nice to be told this earlier as now its too late and will have to go for a full MOT again instead of just a retest.

Can't see why they shouldn't fit, the suspension mounting points, brakes etc are all standard and shared with every other 200, also Monroe who are an OEM manufacture quote the BRM specifically which gives me more confidence than a simple parts guy.

A bit worrying though if you cant buy genuine anymore.

gives me a valid reason when convincing Mrs. Snail to get a set of coil-overs:beer2:

. . . . I don't think she'll fall for it somehow though:wacko:

Supply of parts for cars is normally continued by dealers for 12-15 years after final date of production.

It's easier to get parts for the newer cars for longer as as time has gone on manufacturers have got more switched onto platform sharing components.

I ran ZR 160 shocks and springs on mine.

Although it sat a little higher they fitted fine.

Thanks all so much for your help!! Got the shocks that where on ebay and had them fitted yesterday (car feels so much better to drive now).

Still failed its MOT again today though (****ING CAR!!!) because the back number plate is not lighting up (fault with the wiring) so now I have to spend out even more to get the bloody thing back on the road.

Open boot - the rubber bung on the right hand side - check there is no chaffage there - if so solder back together - just had this on dad's ZR.. !

Thanks mate. Thats what I was thinking and what Im hoping it is. As its more then one thing that is having issues back there its likely to be at the point where the wires are being flexed.

Mine had the same, the wiring was damaged in the rubber bit that joins the boot to the car on the right side, it took half an hour to fix and the guy did it for free because it was just a matter of pulling the wiring out the back and putting insulation tape round it where it had worn.
