Ok so my reluctor rings are nailed, and the ABS is on permently. I looked into removing the ABS on my old 160, and couldn't due to the bias being ECU controlled.

I noticed the BRM has a bias value jobby on the engine bay bulk head, and wondered weather its simple removing the ABS? Or just taking out the fuse without the car swapping end everytime i brake hard, as a quick fix in the interim?

its not a bad job changing the reluctor rings. as long as you have a good tool collection it should only take maybe 30 mins per side. i would be inclined to get some new driveshafts and just shove them on.

Problem is I've just changed the gearbox, and only notcied the problem as I was putting it back together. I dont fancy filling up with gearbox oil again at the price I had to pay for it.

Is it possible to get the driveshaft out the hub end easy enough, without completely taking the driveshaft out?

im not sure to be honest. would you need to fill up the oil again if you take the shafts out?

The driveshaft can be removed from the hub while its still connected to the gearbox, Just need to remove bolt from the hub to bottom of the damper and remove the anti roll bar drop link bolt as this makes it more easier I have found. Hope this helps.

As Richard - you can remove the shaft while one end stays in the gearbox. My experience with PG1 and R65 boxes is predominantly one where it's a bit of a buggar to get the gearbox end of the driveshaft out, but it has popped out accidentally on one occasion only - so there is a risk.

I had a similar problem with a 1999 Rover 400 and I just pulled the ABS fuse (I did not know what the problem was at the time - Rover forums are good for this type of thing :)). I then had consistent non-ABS braking behaviour, whereas with ABS fuse in place, the braking was inconsistent and dangerous as a result. I did lock the brakes up on a couple of occasions as a result though.

I wouldn't advise anyone else to do it. In my position, now that I 'know better' and understand what solution is involved, I'd just take the car off the road (but we have access to two other vehicles). I would not allow any of my children (children - listen to me . . . . the youngest is 18, eldest is 22!) to drive the BRM / ZS without a fully functional ABS system.

pull the fuse, no harm will come. just a slightly spongey pedal at the top end. if you have 2 reluctor rings away you can lose all brakes coming into a juction/roundabout. much easier to pull the fuse for the short term.

I think the fuse is coming out in the short term, I had the same problem with my old zr, and its very dangerous when it happens.

off my head isnt it one of the ones in engine bay fuse box

Look on the fuse box covers, it should be listed. Or do what Al and I did for Kirsty's cigarette lighter and pull fuses until you find the one it is :D

my radio fuse blew yesterday i took off cover under dash looked up the place of fuse,pulled it,and wasnt the one ..10 odd fuse pulls later I found it in a completely different place

Think i've got a worn reluctor ring as my abs is kicking in every now and then at low speeds and gentle pressure on the brake pedal.

Does this sound like a symptom for this ????

One more thing to add to my todo list :(

Yup, probably cracked so needs replacing.

Yes might be a better option as the rings are £10. The extra £10 is worth it for peace of mind on another new part on the car :D
