View Full Version : Project B - MGBK
About 5 years ago the old man and I bought an MGB as a restoration project. It was a rubber bumper convertible modified for a Rover V8 engine, but, it was a non-runner. After taking it apart and completely stripping it down the bodywork was found to be 'ropey' to say the least. Work started rebuilding her, but with the BRM track project it got sidelined and has sat in the unit for a few years untouched and unloved.
Now that the BRM is basically finished we decided to resurrect the project but not as a restoration. As we have enjoyed the track days so much we have decided to make it into a track car primarily because it'll be a great fun rwd car.
The big decision was whether to keep it as a V8. A few factors affected our choice in this.....firstly we had a 3.9l EFI, but tuning it would cost a pretty penny, secondly we watched the MG racing at Brands and an Elise 190 K-series engined MGB destroyed a 3.9 V8 engined MGB, and lastly we had most of the parts already for a monster K!
Well here's where it started all those years ago. The car was bought complete (although not running) but you could tell that there were problems hiding under the skin. Unfortunately I don't have photos of the complete car.
The strip down began and eveything was removed fromthe shell, this photo gives you an idea of the car and its original colour...

It was then sent away for blasting to uncover all of those nasty little suprises...

But there were a lot of bits that needed attention...

Lots of bits that needed replacing/fixing...

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/PICT0056.jpg
So that's where it all started. All of the rotten and damaged bits have either been replaced or welded up. New doors on here, she did have new fron and rear wings as well, but the recent decision to go for the Sebring kit means these have to come off now.
More to follow :)

This is my kind of project! we have a midget in a zillion pieces in the garage that is going to be the subject of a k series conversion. Started it donkeys ago but real life has been getting in the way recently so not much done. Loads of welding to do before the konversion begins.
Just need to finish the new house renovation, sell current house, move into new one, get married, fix the BRM head gasket, and then I think I might be able to get back round to the midget welding. Could be a few years yet then...
There are some really useful people over on the K series midget (and B) forum:

Looks like it's going to be a good build - keep us posted . . . . . . . with plenty of pics:D
Soberphil - excellent link posted there - some good reads.
Interesting site there Phil, I'll be going through that when I have a bit more time, although I'm sure the Dad and I have more than enough skill between us to get this project done
It'll certainly end up looking different to your usual MGB, we have a rather special and very rare hard-top for it, Sebring arches and some other very choice mods ;)

Yeah I'm sure you can get it done no probs - just thought I'd share the link for interest. To be fair most of the people over there are putting Ks into midgets but there are one or two Bs too - including a few racers. To be fair I've not been over there for a while.
Re the hardtop - what is it? I've been on the lookout for an Ashley hardtop for our midget but thus far one hasn't been available in the right place at the right price. No rush though...
Keep us up to date with lots of pics - you never know it might inspire me into a flurry of action!

We're not entirely sure whether it is an Ashley or not. I've actually not managed to find any that are the same as this one, some are similar but there are differences.
The great thing about it is that it's completely fibreglass and perspex and covers back to where the boot normally ends, so we save the weight of the normal metal boot skin. It's so much lighter than the 'works' hardtop as well and gives a much much nicer shape to the car, a lot more coupe-like.

I think it's floating abilities would be quite limited!
what about if you welded on a couple of empty oil drums for bouyancy? Like when you build a raft on outward bound holidays using just planks and sellotape and stuff? ;)
Mini update....(no pictures)
Windscreen is on to allow for measuring and fitment of the rollcage. Also the front coilover suspension (read pain in the bottom) is coming together slowly, but it's a weighty bit of kit!
Lots of bits being bought as well and we had the new HG, bolts, oil ladder delivered! It's the brand new Chinese jobby with the uprated bolts and gasket and I must say the gasket looks very impressive. It's almost thick enough to work as a de-comp plate, something like 7 layers!! I'll grab some pics when I'm at the unit in a couple of weeks :)
Got to the unit last weekend and finally cleared out a bunch of parts that were cluttering up the downstairs. This meant that the B could be rolled out of the corner and put onto the lift, then the spinner taken off for the first time in about 3/4 years!!
So now she's 'floating' on the lift we can mount the suspension/axles and get some makeshift wheels on her so the rollcage can be fitted and engine mocked up in place.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/250920102270.jpg
One small niggle with the front suspension was that the cross member is held in place by 4 bolts with rubber 'lipped' bushes that hold the bolts in place. This seemd crazy, as if the rubber deteriorates, the bolts will just 'flop' about in the holes. Cue some aluminium bushes being made to replace these and 'firm-up' the front end a bit. Might have some issues with shock transference but should be ok and should definitely tighten the steering a wee bit.
So today after Dad made up some spacers we set to getting the suspension all on.

Have you watched 'A car is re-born' on Discovery, hosted by Mark Evans. He restores a MG B on that, could be worth a hunt down on DVD, may prove usefull.
Leaf springs..... I remember those on my Mk1 Escort, changed to coil-overs straight way.

Will the engine be the same spec as the TDR BRM.

Interesting indeed, going for the Sebring look, plus wing.
Pity I can see your final vision because now the roofs on and the rear spoiler,I think it looks horrible, although I know it wont when youve finished
Well the styling won't be to everyone's taste, but that's partly what we were aiming for...something different to the normal MGB look with the 'works' hard-top. It'll anger lots of the MG traditionalists, but if it creates a talking point then it's doing it's job.
When the arches are on with some dished wheels, the stance should compliment the spoiler nicely :D
DarthRaiden
10-29-2010, 09:24 AM
Can't wait to see it then Adam.
Updating classic cars is good.
First real set-back unfortunately We already knew that the rear Sebring arches were naff (about 2 inches too short) so would require some cutting about, but it turns out the front arches are completely useless as well! They're slightly too long and when lined up against the bonnet, the front and rear top edge of the arch fit fine, however the middle top edge curves away from the bonnet giving a nice 1" to 2" gap.
So as they were a complete waste of money the hunt begins for some new wide arches! I've found some mk1 Escort steel arches, but at £400 inc postage they're a bit rich. Fibreglass ones can be had for around £80 though, so that's an option. Really we'd like steel, so may even consider fabricating our own....
Anyhoo, here are the poor panel gaps on the wings...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0029.jpg
They are also shaped badly and leave a huge gap 'behind' the wheel...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0030.jpg
So not best impressed with them at all, complete waste of money there :(
On a happier note, 'mock' engine built up to the gearbox...

Personally I can't see the modern touring car style wing (ugly at the best of times IMO) working with the lovely 60s hard top from a visual point of view, but I guess if it does a job then fair play. I always say each to their own and it would be a boring world if we all had the same taste. Sod the MG purists if they get upset - it's not like the MGB is a really rare car and you butchered one of the last few. There are plenty of standard ones about to keep the purists happy so I say go for it.
Got to admire the work that is going into this project Adam, can't wait to see how it looks when it's finished. What plans have you got for the suspension? Something suitably radical I presume?
You hit the nail on the head there Phil, we're changing the looks to cause a stir and make a statement. As they say "any press is good press"!
The wing has split opinion right down the middle, as will the hard-top as purists only go for the 'works' hard-top. We wanted something different and to create a modern meets retro feel for the car, one of the reasons we're going for the modern K in a retro MGB.
Been a long time with no picture updates, sorry about that everyone, I've been manic with my kitchen retiling and Christmas getting in the way. But for your viewing pleasure we popped up to the unit today and I took a whole host of shots for you to enjoy, so let's get started...

Due to the comically high nature of the car, some drastic lowering was required. Yesterday we mostly tackled the back end.

Have you got any dates in the diary of when you would like it complete ???
Erm.....nope! So many things still to do before it can even go off for paint. It essentially needs building in the bare metal, taking apart, painting, rebuilding properly. not a quick process :(
Mini update on the rear suspension. Fitted some anti-tramp bars but the chassis mounting plates that they came with were crap so we made our own box sections up...

Looking good, can't wait to see it in action.
Had a day of moving cars around on Saturday to get the engine donor car up to the unit to take the engine out.
In the process of moving the donor car into the unit (brakes partially seized and no throttle body so we couldn't drive it in) we needed to move it into position for the lift arms, so decided to jack it up so we could get the 'skates' underneath the wheels.
While jacking it, I had a block of wood on the jack to give it some extra height (this bits important later), there was some coolant spilt on the floor under one of the wheels. Rather than putting the 'skate' through it all I decided to mop it up and while wiping the weight of the car split the block of wood completely in half and the car came crashing down on my poor finger that happened to be underneath it....
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0150.jpg
Luckily my hand was flat and the tyre cushioned some of the blow, but it was rather flat after it'd happened. Dad tried lifting the car and then grabbed the jack but it was all taking a bit too long, so I somehow managed to grab the wheel spokes and pull the car backwards enough to get my hand out.
Thankfully it's all fine though, although a little sore and doesn't look too pretty. All the bones are intact and it's fully moveable. But that was pretty much it for work on the car this weekend :slap:

Well from death comes new life (very prophetic I know) and a car had to die to provide the new beating heart for the MGBK. Unfortunately that car was a BRM, not the proudest thing I've done but it was well beyond economical repair. It has provided a plethora of spare parts for the track BRM and my road BRM however.
So please all take a moment to remember the passing of number 261....

And of course I have the sunroof
And despite all this a new record coming up soon at Longbridge
May the dedicated amongst us survive
Well we've got the donor car block all stripped down and attached to the gearbox so that we can accurately position the engine in the bay so that we can make the engine mounts. Plates for the engine and the rubber mounts are all made now, and we've made the templates for the other parts we need, just have to cut them out and weld it all together.
So this is where the engine will actually sit in the car...

I agree, but it was well beyond saving unfortunately. So rather the engine be given a new lease of life so at least part of it still lives on.
So Saturday was a big day for us as we finally made up the engine mounts. It's a big job getting an engine to sit level with mounts that you're making yourself but I reckon we've done a grand job. So here are a lot of photo's of what was a big achievement for us...
The basic shape was made up by creating a plate to attach to the engine (made using a dummy engine block) and a plate to attach to the mounting rubber. We then cut card templates the fashion the 'joining' triangles nd welded it all together, voila...

That is a lovely B I must say. We're unfortunately not going to be using the Sebring arches any more though, the set we bought from what was reputedly the best place for the mouldings were quite frankly crap. They're to long in some places, too short in others, dont fit correctly at all and for a race car we don't want the whole thing to be held together by filler. The jury is still out on how we're going to accomodate the wheels in the arches but I'm sure we'll come up with something ingenious :)
Here's a few photos from yesterday. We had to re-fit the engine to check the clearances now we've welded up the cross member and it turns out we've got acres of room, for some reason the 'measure twice, cut once' rule went slightly awry. No matter though we can simply weld another piece into the cross member to beef it up a bit more.

Most now adapt Mark 1 Escort bubbles to fit using fibreglass for the gaps. Think the guy who's car it is said something about Mk1 Golf GTi arches too, but I was too busy looking at the car. Theres always Mk2 Escort wings too.
Again we looked at the Escort MK1 arches, in fibreglass they're very cheap but require loads of plod and filling. If you go for steel though they're around £300!!

Good to she her coming along, can't wait to see the completed car.
Will be a wee while yet Darth, wedding plans are taking up most of my weekends that I could have worked on her, doh!
Mini update for you all....
I've not been at the unit for ages due to an impending wedding taking up almost all of my time. We have though made some decisions about the styling and the wings in particular. After much debate over whether to use the Sebring arches or possibly Escort arches we took a step back and thought about what we want from the car. Considering future sale value (not that we have any plans to sell it) and the possibility that we may go racing at some point we decided that it had to conform to the regulations for the MG Championships.
So, no wild arches unfortunately as the rules state that the existing metal of the arches/wings must be utilised and no 'additions' stuck on. This did leave us with the problem of accomodating the wide tyres, but taking a leaf from Ollie Neaves K-series MGB we have 'flared' the rear wings out to give them a bit more of a 'bulge', actually looks very good but keeps the styling a bit more subtle.
I'll update this with pictures when I manage to get up to the unit and we need to sort out the front wings now as well.
So....anyone want to sponsor us to go racing? :D
Long time no update as weddings and honeymoons got in the way of me being at the unit. So here is how she stands at the moment....we've managed to get a suitable ride height at the front now by chopping down the original springs, now we know what size/spec to have some custom fronts made up to. Had the custom oil catch and expansion tanks delivered and mocked in place and fuel filter placement sorted. Need to whip the block out to start building the engine properly and a spare K block will go back in place next weekend so we can carry on mocking up the routing of the piping we need. The big change is on the rear where we've sculpted some arch flares :D
Here's a couple of pictures for you...

Hello Adam,
I was just interested in which gearbox you are going to use. I've been reading up on this subject and most seem to use a Ford type 9, with a custom bellhousing. I ask because my daughter has expressed an interest in having an MGB as an everyday car! ( More work for me!). I have a spare 1600 K-series engine and thought it might do as an economical everyday car. I thought if i could get a gearbox and a bellhousing I could build up the engine before I found a MGB GT. As space is at a premium!
I loved your front coilover idea as well!

Hi, Adam. Does your hardtop look like this one I had on my first MGB? As you say, it makes it look like a low profile BGT. I always understood mine was a Lenham. Lenham still exist, so you can ask 'em. Sorry about the berk standing in front of the car - me at about 24! Enjoy the conversion. Phil

Hi Alan,
We're using a Ford type 9 with a custom bell-housing. You can buy conversion kits from the likes of Frontline, but the engines tend to sit at an angle with the 'front' pointing skywards slightly, the reason for this is that the corss member then doesn't need modifying. I'm sure this is fine for a road car but we wanted the engine to sit properly and level, otherwise it'd likely encounter all sorts of problems on track.

Great photo Phil :D
I believe our hard-top is an Ashley, although I've not found one exactly the same yet. I might get in contact with Lenham and see what they say!

Hello Adam,
Thank you for the reply, but I wondered if you could expand on "custom bellhousing". Can you modify the type 9 bell housing? Engineering I can do so if it is possible to redrill the ford bell or make an adapter plate, then that's the way I'd like to go! I also like your comments on a level engine. The other question I have is, which type 9 do you buy, short or long shaft?
Another Alan
I'm not sure you could modify the type 9 bellhousing, an adaptor plate may work but I haven't seen any for sale so I don't think anyone has tried to be honest. You can buy the bell housings for both types, long & short, we bought ours from QED which I believe is £258+vat (£309.60).

Thanks for the information Adam.
Is the QED bell-housing any different to say the Frontline one, in that your engine sits in the horizontal plain and not nose ( timing belt) up! Or did you alter the front cross-member to make the engine sit level?
Thanks for the help you are a great inspiration, why have a normal boring depreciating car, when you can build something unique! I'll look at your build again. By the way I have a Midas convertible, which is normally fitted with an A-series engine, but has had the front tastefully extended and now sports a K1400 and the five speed box! That's why I'm so interested in the K engine, but I'm preaching to the converted!
Another Alan
To be honest I'm not sure of the differences between the QED housing and the Frontline one, we went for QED as had some other bits from them. We cut and re-welded/reenforced the front cross member to allow the engine to sit level otherwise the sump would have fouled quite dramatically.
The Midas sounds good though, you'll have to put some pictures up :)

Maybe you should contact a certain mobile phone firm for sponsorship or possibly the Dutch tourist board?
It will be a race commentator's dream. "And it's the Jaffa first into Hangar..."
Sponsorship would be lovely, not sure how far I'd get though

Sure will Gary, the strip lights really don't show off the colour in photos. Hopefully we can get it on wheels soon once the front suspension, etc is all fitted, waiting on some parts though now.
More tinkering and building, bits going on slowly but surely.

Credit where credit's due, young Alan. I made the tea.
Lots of little bits done and also today we tackled a mini project within this project, but details later.
First up some rear suspension. Here's an interesting picture comparing the bolt that is supplied with the rear dampers. Notice how short the bolt is and that has to take the full force of the damper (this is it roughly in position)....

So in our search for perfection Dad has made up a strengthening spacer and we've got some rod that just needs cutting to size and threading for that extra strength, much better...

Now on to our mini project for today, PROJECT PEDALS.
Who wants to buy off the shelf aftermarket pedals, that's boring and undoubtedly they wont fit, however with pedals as small as the original MGB has they don't really have much 'meat' on them. Also to reduce the distance needed to move your feet between the pedals we needed something a bit bigger. Just for reference there is a 3" gap from edge to edge between each pedal to begin with, we've now reduced this to 1".
Original pedal...

Well a pretty frustrating day today at the end of the day. A few hours spent driving over to Moss for not the greatest customer service, but managed to get most of the bits in the end.
Also ran into some problems fitting the pedals late in the day just with some minor fitment issues, nothing a bit of tinkering won't sort but slowed down progress.

So I hadn't been up to the unit for a couple of weeks and Saturday was rather infuriating to say the least. Well you didnt do much at all while we were all out having fun
srs good work dude
A good day up at the unit, lots of little bits done and slowly still getting there. Sorry about jumping around with the pictures today but there was a lot going on.
So to start, a big part of the morning was spent spraying up the windscreen surround. I've not got any before pics but here she is in glorious greeny goodness...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0680.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0683.jpg
Lots of bits done to the brakes today, firstly fitting the brake bias valve...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0681.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0684.jpg
Then onto the handbrake cable, it needed a mount inside the car so Dad knocked up a little piece of ally...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0682.jpg
Then we fitted that and fed the cable through, just need to make a connector between the cable and the handbrake now...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0688.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0689.jpg
These next pictures are really for northerner51 on theMGZR.co.uk, you asked previously about the holes in the lower mounts for the dampers/anti-tramp bars, etc. Well it turns out the extra support we made for the damper mount was fouling the anti-tramp bar when fitted, so a bit of drilling and new holes had to be made. Two original holes now redundant and the dampe bolts in the middle with the anti-tramp bar at the bottom...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0685.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0686.jpg
And now some clearance...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0687.jpg
The nice weather allowed us to open up the unit door, so here's a better idea of the actual colour of the car...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0690.jpg
Brake lines now all made, routed and plumbed in...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0691.jpg
Then I got mucking about with more carbon...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0692.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0693.jpg
Refitted the catch tank...

Gratuitous engine bay shot...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0695.jpg
Then I had to leave whilst Dad was fitting our little slimline fan, completely free from a Renault Espace of all things that was being scrapped...

Every time I see all that orange paint I go a bit funny :D
Few trials and tribulations recently with the build, see if you can spot the major hurdle we've encountered by the end of this latest set of pictures...
But first up, random shot of the anti-tramp bars fitted and now rose jointed at both ends...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0706.jpg
So now onto how to fix a Rover 200 handbrake to an MGB handbrake cable, first up a shiny painted handbrake...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0707.jpg
Now we have the two offending bits that need connecting...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/TDR%20MGB-K/IMAG0708.jpg
Simples, use your custom made handbrake connector...

Nicely over-engineered but a good solution allowing the Rover 200 handbrake adjuster to still be used...

So the engine mounts went in, primarily because the drivers side one (on the left of this picture) can't be done up easily with the steering rack in place, so the rack came off the mounts went on and then the rack back in...

And now an exciting update from today, she has wings!!

My head went up inside the wing for a bit, here are a couple of shots showing some of the bolts that pull the wing into the body...

So with the wings on, why not test fit the front grill...

Then it was on to getting the windscreen in. An absolute pig of a job and it took us a few hours this afternoon, lots of pushing, shoving, swearing and ranting. Here's the most awkward bolt in the world...

This piece is actually under the outer wing, the greenish bit is the bottom of the windscreen...

So a good few leaps forward towards getting her done! Although now the big problem...the eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that the car is now on axle stands and there are bits of lift scattered underneath the car. That's right, our lift has packed up! Complete ball ache but just another hurdle to overcome, now we've pretty much got to get the car on wheels in case the lift engineer needs to dismantle the whole thing. Will let you all know what happens :)

Top work, really is beginning to take shape, love the fact its getting BRM bits into the mix, shame about the lift lets hope its an easy fix :)
You and me both Al. Hopefully we wont have to move the car to fix the lift, but it may well have to 'roll' out of the door sooner than we'd liked.
So lots of little bits been going on with the car lately but I've not really been at the unit. The lack of lift has hampered progress as well, hopefully that'll be back up and running soon. Biggest challange at the moment is sorting a working wiring loom so that's a nice task to befuddle the brain.
Anyhoo, I've not really got a lot of photos apart from these three little gems showing the test fitting of the hard-top. Gives a good idea of what the car will look like...

It looks to have some serious rubber on it!?
Cheers guys.
She does have some wide rears, we had to flare the arches to fit them in!

Beautiful! Good luck with your car :)
The lift is fixed! Good news that a major hurdle is sorted and we can crack on with more of the big jobs.
No photos, but last weekend saw the starter ring fitted to the flywheel and we cracked on with the wiring. Trying to decipher the old BRM loom to strip it back to it's bare minimum was a bit of a challenge and we'll probably have to remake a lot of it but I guess we're about half way there with that.

One of the garages I deliver parts to has a rather neglected looking MGB roadster sat outside.
I was talking to one of the guys about it the other day, apparently it now has a T Series Turbo engine with 5 speed box in it.

You'd also need the patience of a saint. I believe this project started in about 2005! :-)

I've seen a thread somewhere on a T-series B, looked a bit of a handful.

Perfectionism takes time I'm afraid ;)

Don't ask :drunk:
So the lift is now fixed, woohoo! Lots of moving around of cars today as we rolled the B outside and moved the very very dusty BRM onto the lift to have a look over it and replace the damaged splitter (damaged loading on to the trailer). Not a lot done on the B apart from fitting the lamp covers (no pictures, sorry) but here are a few I took at random points today...
The offending 'nut' that caused the lift not to work...
