Hey All
Thought its about time I started my own build thread,it may not be the fastest in the world, due to my budget, but I realised as I go to my freinds tomorrow to fit another engine, that Ive begun to go a lot further than was originally intended when I bought the car.
Bought last September for £690 on E Bay,I had previously owned 3 Rover coupes in a row,one was written off,one was sold and the last still sits in my brother in laws driveway waiting for me to break or sell the car.
I never had any intention of getting serious with this car and didnt even know anything about theBRM.co.uk till I joined in January, since then well suddenly I realised although not a good example what I had bought and I had no Idea that one day Adam would ask me to become a moderator on this site.
So forgive my thread for being slightly backward to start with.
Scruffy build number 70 and 73 out of the total build

Ok what Have I done since last September,I started with the interior, the centre consol had been burned/melted probably by the cigerrette lighter that flies out if used, this was rubbed down filled and sprayed, the passenger seat was showing a loss of colouring on its creases, this was cleaned re-dyed and along with the rest of the leather treated to plenty of conditioner, the drivers door handle had come unstitched so was re-foamed and re-stitched,generally there was a lot of cleaning and tidying up,the drivers seat is unsavable so I need a new one,the roof leaks so again a replacement needs to be found, the steering wheel needs replacing (dont they all) and Ive added a coupe consol which was recovered in red leather though not an exact match
I have purchased another carpet from a member on this site and its waiting to go in,but only when I have cured all the leaks that have ruined the present one.
Anyway a few pics you might have seen before but hey as I said I have to go backward a bit with this thread

Most the other work has been tidying up interior and exterior,a new stereo a sony bluetooth which is a godsend for hands free phone calls,an amp in the boot and a subwoofer along with larger front speakers crossovers and tweeters. It passed its MOT this year with 2 adviseries a track rod end and a tyre.

Mechanically so far with the exeption of the already new backbox,a whole new exhaust system has been fitted, standard but genuine Rover, downpipe cat and middle section,I find the rover system expensive but sorced 2 parts from members of various Rover forums, and think the quality of the exhaust compared to aftermarket is a different legue
Brakes the usual hanbrake probs meant freeing the o/s cable where it attaches to the caliper and replacing the n/s along with a new set of pads
I broght the car on the strenth that the HG had been done along with a new radiator,I ended up fixing the fan back on the radiator where it had come loose and re-arranging the top brackets which were mis fitted,a complete bodge and yep the Hg failed again,so I have purchased a newer engine 34,000 miles from Aldershot car breakers in the hope HGF aside it will serve me longer than mine which has become very noisey
Tomorrow well very nearly today as I write this I start the engine replacement along with my ex mechanic Stuart,we are lucky enough to have freinds in the buisness to lend us a hoist and he has the hard standing at his house to do the job, lets just hope its dry for the next few days.
weve already taken delivery of the engine and fitted new belts and water pump, the thermostat has been removed and the centre cut away to allow for a PRT kit which moves the thermostat to the front of the engine....2 notes 1) here rimmer bros our/were out of stock of the prt kit (landrover) so I am rearranging a kit for an Elise (I like to compicate my life) but its made by PTP and containes silicon hoses which Ive worked out will fit if I use 2 of them and cut up the third+add a t piece bought seperatly 2) a new tensioner for the timing belt has arrived after the initial belt fit so goes on tomorrow.
Oh and a new clutch kit,non genuine but my budget was blown lets wait and see how good the National kit is,and while were at it the track rod end from the MOT advisery
Ready for tommorrow pic

Ok on with today not long home thanks to London transport, and a funny old day it was, arrived at South Harrow at 10.30 After tea and chat found out my freinds mini had made it back from the New Forest with an overheating problem and a ficked thrust bearing,so instead of starting mine,my engine got one last outing to Potters Bar to Mini spares,we got back and after more tea went and collected the hoist, finally work commenced at 1.30pm,lots of undoing and pulling apart for the next two and a half hours, before we had to dissapear again to help another old freind move a caravan (long story). We got another couple of hours in but at least got the engine out and built up the new one
A few pics enjoy
The bit that held me up the most was the battery tray of all things lots of bolts on that thing and all corroded to hell.

Ok a fullish day at it,when I arrived Stuart had already removed the gearbox from the old engine and I was just in time to help carry it up the garden too give it a clean, once done a bit of greese on the shaft and we poped the new bearing in and fitted it to the new engine.
One more part needed locally,a new alternator belt,a £10.50 rip off from loyds motor spares. So alternator starter motor a few sensors swapped for my old ones as we new they worked ok and in it went
Oh and a good flush through of the cooling pipes and Radiator.

Well all new gearbox oil, engine oil, antifreeze and power sterring fluid,no leaks a moment of chugging that soon went away warmed up till thermostat opened a couple of times and then a quick spin round the block, the clutch almost catching me out after getting use to the worn one, biting a lot lower and the peddle felt ten times to light (Nice)
Only grumble the power stering didnt seem to want to bleed to easily no matter how many times it was turned onto full lock.
Decided to drive home via my brothers in Watford so got a good hour long run tonight, returning to Stuarts tomorrow to clear up my mess and still not happy with the steering so pumps might get swapped
WOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :clap2:

Cheers guys.
I could only loose out now if the head gasket blows on this one in the next year,as its so much better, not just for having a newer engine, but the difference in having all the oils changed and of course a new clutch.and knowing your belts water pump etc are all good, the power steering after a long drive finally de-aired itself and the bottle went down from max to minimum,so toped up today and have now covered just over 50 miles,Iam going to do an early next oil change about 3000 miles just to be fussy and have left the bottom engine cover off because that crossmember is so rusty I want to clean treat and paint it,hopefully now can get on with all the little things and next summer think about getting some spray work done :-)

Defo better looking in my opinion it wipes ok compared to the old one, what a job though getting the jets back working I had a block down the pipe that runs through the motor itself and it wernt shifting, ended up drilling a hole through the bottom of the casing, getting some wire and pushing it through till it shifted all the crud, then I had to glue a piece of plastic over the hole to seal it up...that bend from where the pipe attaches and then goes up and through the motor is a right bad place for blockages

Well today I need a Blue Peter badge :D I got something for free courtesy of another member,a Cupra splitter, the downside it had been cut short at both ends...so a little lunchtime project...lying on the floor screwing it in on my own I soon had it up and manouvered it around till I felt it was were I liked it
Next job (heres the blue peter bit without sticky back plastic) I cut some ally mesh bent it double and made it fit in the ends, stuck it in place after some trimming with some good old Araldite rapide ,I next put a big wodge of filler over the mesh and cut a couple of bits of plastic from an old carpet edge/gripper,stuck it to the filler and mesh, let dry and some more filler to be rubbed smooth tomorrow.
will it hold together who knows, probably depends how many times I decide to hit the splitter :D

Well thats certainly red, makes me think of my boot carpet which is a lump of brand new red carpet that was thrown away at the college, dont know how serious you are but no normal carpet will fit in a car interior as you would never get it to shape in all directions needed,it would really need to be moulded to fit the car
Nobrainer
05-04-2011, 08:54 PM
Well the thought was a bit tongue in cheek about the deep rug but I thought the problem with moulding the carpet was flexibility. Car carpet has a latex backing I think. Could definately do with some new carpet but I really should focus on brakes as I have them and bushes? as the car is all over the place when accelerating

I didnt take a before shot but look up above to my last post and you will notice the rear arch curving in,the rear side strip being held in at a angle due to the car being driven through a gap it didnt fit through, this put a deep scratch from the front wing all the way down the car rather like it had been keyed, the rear side strip itself took the brunt of the damage, but underneath it there were also two nasty dents and then the rear wheel arch lost lots of paint and must have been left untreated till I brought her back from Hull to London.in fact working on the mechanics and interior over the last year or so it had just been a case of paint over the rust till I can get round to it .Some pics
Here we go lets pull scruffy apart, back seats and rear interior panel removed amongst other things
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2704.jpg
Inside the rear wing a nice piece of sound deadening foam covered in plastic and then what I presume is Rovers version of waxoil..I shall call it gunk and it makes a mess of your hands AAAHHHH and it a good fight to get out
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2708.jpg
Bag of crap out and one of the two main dents came out quite well by levering a lump of wood up and down, you will notice some surface rust inside, this was because I was about to find a nice hole were spray from the wheel arch was coming through
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2706.jpg
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2705.jpg
With already so much damage around the bottom of the wheel arch it didnt help to have to more rusty dents at the top
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2709.jpg
What also didnt help as I knocked out the two main dents I found it had been hit before and now filler above the rear strip started cracking
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2710.jpg
After a bit of hammering and levering I stuck the rear side strip back on,which annoyingly had straightened itself back up after I had bought a whole side strip replacement,I also took a flat edge and some course paper to find how many high and low spots I had after struggling to knock the front dent out,it was in an awkward place were hammering was restricted, you can also see the now nearly non existant rear arch
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2701.jpg
Anyway a couple pics showing the strip sitting straight ...Hoorah havent seen it like that before
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2703.jpg
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2707.jpg
further up the car the door handle had been gouged at by some theives so the body work dosnt stop at the wing :(
http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/FastAlan/DSCN2711.jpg
that was my extended lunch hour gone and I needed to collar a store to start putting the interior in,as its all coming out this week to fit another carpet and get at any other rust lurking inside
Tommo some filler...lots of filler and a bit more interior stripping

Not so bad when its straight and flat but they are curved from the door to the rear wing ,so I was a bit annoyed when the filler cracked above...not to bad though, the biggest job is cutting the arch off, because you cant buy these Iam going to have to fabricate a new arch from my old Coupe,I will be taking next week off work and going to strip the front wing of it then have my mate do some welding for me

Hmmm dont think I ever found any because maybe on the 3 door like we have its not so much of a arch like the 5 door as the back of the arch is made up by the rear bumper panel so the main part of the arch just carries onto the back of the car ,you can get a whole panel but thats loadsamoney.
After todays work it seems Iam going to be cutting the majority out around the bottom sill and some of the front of the arch

Well took the wheel arch liner off today before the welding gets done tomorrow and had a good look underneath, the liner had done its job well and after a good wash with me trusty Karcher I found only a few small rust spots, the hole through to the inside of the car under closer observation turned out to be a hole missing a bung so no problem there, except Iam not sure if there should be a bung or not,I washed the car, loaded in the carpet steering wheel and drivers seat to give me something to do while my mate gets on with the welding.

Made hard work of it today, basically the spray filler didnt want to take to some of the filler and cracked in a few places, then in my annoyance I rubbed down to early and made another couple of poor areas where the spray peeled off.
In the end I got everything as good as I could and then covered it in grey primer,I then sprayed back over this (without any cracking) the areas that where bad.I decided to let the paint thoroughly harden over a couple of days and moved onto the door.

Whole car would be nice and the better way,but I dont think I have the budget for now + if I went that route I know I would just end up pulling it so far apart I would take ages and I would not get it too the NEC in November so its getting done in 3 stages 1) passenger side. 2) drivers side rear wing 3) bonnet (unless I source a good one) and windscreen back out to get at the rust I know is behind it. It all also depends on what the sprayer thinks of my plan, plus come September when Insurance is due Iam looking at maybe getting a daily user so I can devote more time to her

Well with a move of house, relationship breakup, the poor weather of previous weeks and other commitments its been slow progress,I decided I wasnt happy with a couple of bits of my bodywork, under the trim on the rear wing I had lost the curve and gone a bit flat and there was some previous painting on the roof section that showed some poor workmanship,(will take a pic tommo). So I spent the last few days adding more filler to the rear wing, pulling off the gutter strip to do the paint work up top and also found a little bit of rust at the back under the gutter trim (well worth lifting and cleaning up here folks) this was given treatment with Kurust and Hammerite before it could spread to the roof,Had the front mudflap off to get at the little bit of rust thats hiding behind there,so all in all a productive week......now to find a sprayer (how much should a side respray cost)

Well today hasnt worked out too well, but thats just me being disappointed not to have a finished paint job,the problem was the sprayer had run out of the tint he needed to shade the paint, apparently its one not used much and it caught him out,the next problem was by the time he realised the base coat was on,the car was all masked up and if had I took it away and left it to the weather the water based paint he was using would have become a complete mess....so it got finished in a dark green Ford paint for the moment, just to look respectable and the car will now get painted the correct colour during the week.
On my front Iam a bit dissppointed with myself although the back wing is looking great for the damage it had a few stone chips on the door I did are still showing so Iam going to have to talk to him and see if he can correct these for me while he is at it........Not pleased with myself should have sprayed some top coat on and made sure these areas were perfect
Progress is all good thoug Al, stick with it buddy :)

Flat electric sander with p80 grade just sands the raised bits easy, after paint do the same but worked it down with medium grade and fine before painting

Some of you might remember the warped VVC pulley affair before POL last year, seems it did some more damage, the top end developed a loud knock over the last week so today me and me mate changed the oil and investigated, the pulley now seems to be moving side to side,so presume a bearing is damaged in the casing......what to do,think the cars really unusable at the moment as I dont want it all to go bang but cant take time of work and dont know whats needed to fix it :(

That's bad news Alan :( How about a replacement head ??? might be easier and cheaper then rebuilding yours with replacement parts. Give MJS auto marine a call he always seems to have some kicking about.

Well went to fix the problem with my VVC/camshaft unit today,on the drive over to my friends house the cam detached itself from the vvc unit, this bent 2 inlet valves, whatever was out of shape was destroying the pulley put on last year before POL,guess I will never know why I had this problem with that front VVC/camshaft unit, but my guess is the engine took at knock when it was at the salvage yard that I bought it from.
That aside, the biggest shame was not being able to prove how much good the use of OAT antifreeze and a PRT kit would be to keep this head going, but in its favour I took off an immaculate head gasket and had a head with virtually no pitting,so Iam still a believer in what I did was a help against HGF
