View Full Version : Exploding Wing Mirror

Driving down the motorway Tuesday night and I hear a bang all of a sudden from the passenger side. Looking at my mirror the casing was still in place but the mirror itself had flopped down hanging on only by the wires.

A quick diversion to TDR Restorations in West Kingsdown allowed me to have a look at what went wrong and attempt to fix it.....

In the second picture you can see a white bit to the right of my thumb, thats where there was a piece of steel had the spring attached to it. After 9ish years it decided to give way under the strain of the spring :slap:

Rather than buy a whole new set of innards for the mirror a fix was needed.

The bolt is holding it fine now, was a struggle getting the spring on and required taking the entire mirror apart but its all working in perfect order :D

Its amazing that such a powerful spring is hooked around such a weeny bit of metal, but now its extra strong :mml:

thought you might appreciate this Adam, just noticed it after I disassembled the new mirror to paint it.

Offending part on BRM mirror that broke in your case:

However, the replacement mirror (from a vi, so odds are it's older) had a completely different (and better) construction!

Weird, the vi design seems much simpler and cheaper to make!

Adam,

Yeah, the mirrors are a nightmare to get back on. Mine came apart a few months back when I had a close encounter with a garage wall. Almost lost a few fingers getting it back on.

Ooh, how odd they changed the designs so much!

It doesn't show it in the photo, but the rod that spring is attached to is actually bent. I expect a similar fate was awaiting that one (and the other side). I just broke it first!

had the same with my n/s mirror...used a modified spring from a brake shoe kit...does the job...
