Hi all
Just arranging some insurance for the new BRM I just brought from Welshone.
Now I got some quotes a couple of months back via confused.com and they were coming in at £400 for comprehensive so I thought "great - not too bad"
Now they're coming in at over £600 and nothing has changed. What's happened? Is the BRM suddenly a much riskier car?
I'm a 30 year old living in TN17 with 4 years NCB and two speeding convictions. I'm a solicitor (i.e. not a footballer or entertainer!). I've had no claims. Tried OH as named driver and that makes very little difference. Car is garaged at night and is not modified at all.
This will be my main car so most classic policies are out. Anyone in particualar I should be considering. LV just quoted me £1,400 with a £1,000 excess!!
Cheers
Stu

It really sucks.
I can insure a 180bhp motorbike that does 0-60 in under 3 seconds worth 12k for under £100.
but car insurance is becoming so expensive many people are actually being priced out and just drive around without it. With the service you get from some companies when you do have to claim I can quite understand the sentiment!
Still, well chuffed I got the BRM and won't let it get me down!!

I went with Aviva through a cashback site (worth £70) they're not on comparison sites. Also check if you made any small changes to your quotes. Sometimes something that seems insignificant can bump the price up. Then check with the company that gave you the original cheapest quote. The quote may still be valid or they may match it or help you try and get it down. One more thing, sometimes keeping it in a garage may be more expensive than on a driveway
Try Adrian Flux, sometimes a car with one minor modification can be insured for less than a standard car with a different company.

Ahhh. Apt timing. I renewed mine yesterday. Well a couple of things I learnt.
1. July is the most costly time of year to renew. Found this out via the MoneySavingExpert site from Martin Lewis. Worth a look.
2. Quotes in the morning are cheaper than in the evening. Had one for £240 this became £261 by the evening.
I had 6 windows running with 2 sites, go compare and money supermarket. So 3 windows on each site if you like. I input identical data on each and each time the cheapest quote was different. How that happens is beyond me.
It was also apparent that elephant cannot keep to their price when you push to buy. Why? Again a mystery.
The main worry though was the excesses. I even saw £900 at one stage. Which effectively negates the value of the car.
In the end I went with more than after a lot of work, but even so my insurance has increased by £60 from last year.
My specs: 43 yr old, coach driver in oxon, 11 ncb, no convictions. Fully comp, £75 comp excess, no vol excess but a windscreen excess of 75 quid.
I am still not happy - but believe me when I say I did my homework and put the hours in to get it too £261 and I still had to drop personal accident from it's cover.
I was with Admiral. £200 last year, £352 this year. It may pay to shop around but we are getting shafted.

Try with a lower excess. I found I could drop mine without any increase in premium from the original offer. Fully comp can be cheaper than tpft. Adding second driver esp low risk can bring the premium down.

Very interesting Barracuda. I also found some inconsistencies with the comparison websites. Annoyingly the first three cheapest I went throuigh didn't have the speeding convictions recorded so I totally wasted my time. Pretty sure they do that on purpose!!
I tried just about everything I could think of within the realms of the law to get it down. In the end I followed Adam's advice and tried Adrian Flux. Not only was it the cheapest but now I can legally fit a Pipercross Viper induction kit and a Janspeed exhaust. Still £527 for TPFT!! With Adrian flux the speding conviction didn't actually affect the premium. It's with Groupama and has all the trimmings.
Mileage is limited to 5,000 so I'll have to keep an eye on that. Should be ok as I'll probably take the BRM off the road for part of winter and use the Shogun V6 beast when the weather turns.
Glad AF worked for you Stu, they seem to be the best for me even now my speeding 'misdemeanour' has gone from my licence. Mind you I have quite a few mods on mine, although I too am limited to 5k per year.

I only pay some £400, but that was an increase over the previous year, hopefully with another years no claims it should drop. My renewal is in October. MOT is in 2 weeks time.

I've only been driving cars for 5 years (bikes for 15 years). I have two speeding convictions and only 4 years NCB. My particular postcode for some reason is quite expensive. Last year I moved from TN11 to TN17 (rural to rural) and my premium for a Ford KA 1.3 went from £407 to £507 and that was Comp with Swiftcover. Total joke.
I guess location and experience must be the biggest factors.
Kent is a dodgy place to live

Some of it is but I live as far away from other people as possible. It's the best way.
Also, I grew up in Thurrock which is a fairly low standard for comparison!!

I've just been working on some designs for a Barratt Homes site at Thurrock!

Don't forgot to allow space for their burnt out cars, shopping trolleys and knackered buggeys!

I don't know about that, Goudhurst isn't that far away :trampoline:

still fighting a claim for damage done to the NUB back in December . my insurance company said it was possibly a write off due to cost of repairs £600 . what gets me is insurance companies are charging us for group 16 for a Rover BRM limited edition , but when it comes to a claim it just becomes a Rover 200 at market value . i know BRM's are at an all time low at the moment , but there a lot of good low mileage examples still about which surely must have some value . maybe its time to start as an owners club to get some written valuations drawn up depending on condition , mileage etc , to protect our green and orange marque . i will be interested to read other members thoughts on this matter , especially Adam and Alan .

I just get bloody annoyed having some company try to sell me insurance that is greater than the cars worth, even Adrian Flux wanted 800 for mine, dont know much about an owners club putting valuations on a car but if someone points me in the right direction I would certainly pursue it

It's not just the vehicle they're insuring, it's all the other costs - indemnity, personal injury etc. If Fully Comp (and I know some aren't), the potential payout if the insured hits someone else and the other party then claims against the insured.
And don't forget, the biggest cost is covering us law-abiding and decent honest people against those who choose to drive without insurance. Sort them out and the problem might become more manageable.

I'd be complaining if I was 17 and insuring my first car! Have you seen what they have to pay for something like a fiat cheekycento??

When I was young you could afford to go to work buy your own house and look forward to some sort of future now you couldnt afford a shed down here, ones things for sure no matter what excuses they come out with, the rich are getting richer and nobody cares about much except how much better off they are than everyone else

I say to people 'don't buy a house'. They are unsustainably overpriced. When interest rates rise prices will collapse as people default and try to sell and you'll be left regreting it. Its happened before and it will continue to happen.
(This is an opinion based on my own views and should not be taken as fact :). Don't blame me for anything except my own f^ck ups, of which there are plenty enough)
Insurance wise, you pay for the performance of the car. If I was 17 I wouldn't buy a car. You coped without it at 16. Save the money, take a taxi.

Unless you're a 17 year old spotty nerdwell - then skint yourself buying the best car you can afford, it's the only way you're going to get laid, or at least get a girl close enough to you so you can smell her hair and imagine. :fez:

Update: Having taken out the Adrian Flux TPFT policy for £527 plus £55 for breakdown cover and 35% apr for paying in installments. (Total= much more than I paid for the car!) I then get a written quote through the post from ClassicLine (I think someone on here recommended them but can't remember who). £230 comp including EVERYTHING. Even an agreed value policy at £1,500 (subject to valuation).
Only problem is they don't insure modified cars.
I now have the option of sticking with what I've got or retruning the car to standard (for which I don't have the parts) and cancelling the policy with AF.
Dilemma!
