As most will have read or know I have simple Simons BRM now. The car is number 241 and was in a sorry state when I got it. Here is a list of the things wrong with the car......

All four arches rusty (not rotten.....yet)
Two patches on both front roof gutters
Boot hinges rusting
Two bubbles on OSF door (nothing serious)
Front panel has snapped all 3 spot welds????
Whole exhaust rotten, from downpipe to tailpipe
Sat on mg straights
Scuff on front bumper
Windscreen wipers don't work on intermittent
Losing a very small amount of water when on a long run (poss radiator as it isn't the best)
Dodgy bodge of a HT lead as he couldn't get a set of leads? lol
Discs and pads aren't brilliant, but not desperate either
Poss sticking NSR caliper
Short Mot

And I think thats it lol.

Jobs completed so far include......

New down pipe and decat fitted to a complete Ashley competition exhaust system, very nice sound to it.
K&n induction kit fitted.
Mg straights sold.
Rover cosmos wheels fitted (not brm, but will do for now).
2 front wings headlights and bumper removed for de-orange process and scuff repair on bumper and replacement of wing.
Floorplan and suspension components all chemically washed down and started to repaint any slightly corroded items like anti roll bar and wishbones etc.

Couple of pics of the car's bad points and progress.......

Good work so far,its certainly rotted in some of the worst places, hate it when those gutter rails rot,got too mine in time, ditto with the hinges, but Iam sure youll make a good job of them.

Gazzati

Apparently the hinge rot that is common on the 200 bubble, is due to the body flex in the car which over time splits the seal and allows water in and then the rest is as pictured above. The gutters are no biggy really, they just look like a pain in the rear, the main advantage with these cars is the non metallic paint, this makes matching the new with the old so much easier. Just while I am here, does anyone have a OSF wing before I go and buy/paint a new one? I have a NSF off a brm so no paint required there, so the other one located would be half the battle won :)

Looks like a good project. The exhaust looks good. What paint are you using on the underside of the car?

Adam

Looks spotless....erm....

Glad your sorting it all out, big project there!

Gazzati
09-18-2011, 06:38 PM
Once the underside has been fully cleaned off I will give it a light coat of brooklands green and a couple of coats of lacquer. The ti calipers will be colour coded too then may find some other bits and pieces to zap while I get spray happy lol. It's not all that bad Adam, I've seen a lot worse lol. It won't be all getting done at once, I have had the bmw in the background a year and although it's mint now underneath and inside, I have some little bodywork detailing to do on that too. Did you get my message Adam?

How much you pay for the ashley exhaust??

Whats the sound like??

Gazzati
09-23-2011, 05:48 PM
The exhaust was £190 delivered and it sounds excellent, not boyracer Nova loud, but loud enough and has a nice burble on the de throttle. I will be making an effort to attend some of the events after the bodywork is completed, so people can see the progress in the flesh and judge for themselves, but anyone considering these systems, I would be prepared to do a youtube vid or something for them ;)

Adam, the stickers have come, cheers buddy, and that lead annoys me everytime I pop the bonnet lol, next job me thinks.....

Alan, I'm taking the car to Barry Ashley body repairs in Chester. I said to Bazza that I might have to have a bit done at a time, price dependent, and he said that he will do it all at once and pay him when I have the cash on the weekly :) Very nice guy, and an excellent panel beater to boot. Gonna put BRAND NEW rear arches in and a new front wing and is charging me cost price on materials. When done I feel some free plugging will be in order ;)

Shaggy
09-23-2011, 07:18 PM
Ask him how much for a full spray.

If i still own mine after xmas i may get it done

Gazzati
09-27-2011, 03:53 PM
Right, car is booked in next week for............

2 x brand new rear arches (done properly with new panels)
2 x front wings (1 new and one used and supplied by me)
Both boot hinges re plated
Both front roof gutters done
Front panel re welded (were the spot welds have snapped on o/s)
2 x rust bubbles on the drivers door done
Boot lock rust done
Front bumper scuff done
And last of all........full respray.........

This is all for the price of £1000. Now this guy charges £300 per rear arch, so it's not a bad price. He will have the car for 2 weeks and having seen the cars leaving there before, should be very impressive. The advantage with this is he is allowing me to pay him weekly, so no big bill at the end. I could of had it done for £700 but he would of only repaired the existing arches, not fitted new ones. I will be popping in there and grabbing pics as the work commences and hopefully we will all be in awe of the final result :snap:

Car went in today :( now having to drive the cabbie around  Have stripped the car myself, which might lower the price a little and have took some pics on my phone, which I will upload as soon as download new zune software. Anyhow, it's looking very sorry for itself right now, but I know how it will look when done, so this makes me smile a little :)

Gazzati
10-20-2011, 06:57 PM
Righty oh then. I will add pics when the computer plays fair. The boot hinges are done, but Bazza has done the whole seal along the spot welded roof, so hopefully this will not happen again :) the front panel was removed at the otherside and completely treated and sealed, so no worries there. Windscreen is out and the gutters are been done as we speak. New front wings are fitted and then we are on to the rear quarters, yippee!!!! Have now added some extras to the list, all the silver trim is getting redone too, and in order to make this as "project" as possible, the chrome front grill is getting the sparkle too :)

Now for the wheel adaptors, there been made from a specialist near me, I have sourced the wheels and when the car is fit for the road it is going there to have the sizes taken and the adaptors made:bounce:

Phew, then there is the inside to start..............

Sounds nice m8... I really appreciate the money and work you put in to make your BRM spotless and keep it alive.

Just some experience regarding rust on the RF...
The spot welded roof is really a common problem on the RFs. As I've seen a lot of RFs going through my hands, all of them had some rust on the outside or even worse on the inside of the roof welding points. Mostly it is caused by the sealent, if any used, and/or the paintwork getting porous under the plastic liners up top and the water starts to find its way inside. Another cause is rust working its way from the boot hinges up and round the roof. Same goes for the windshield frame, which mostly gets damaged to the naked steel during windscreen replacement.

Gazzati
10-21-2011, 06:06 PM
Hi mate. We pulled off the gutter strips and it was starting both sides, the boot hinge area was only really one side, and that had started creeping towards the roof so thats all been chopped out and replaced and resealed properly. What I heard on this rust issue was, that the body has to much flex at the rear and so would crack the sealer and result in the paint cracking too. Obviously left untreated in a water escape route isn't going to do it any favours. Hopefully this is all rectified now. Just on the money side, I have renegotiated and we are settled on £800 as a job lot. It is a very intensive labour job, and his work is top notch, so the car will owe me £1200 and be a minter. That to me is one cheap collectors car:punk:

I will post the pics Thursday evening of the finished article, but needless to say I am VERY impressed with the finish :hump: If anyone would like to contact Barry Ashley for a competitive price on bodywork repairs, the details are as follows;

Welcomed home the lady today :cake: have been meaning to collect her for weeks, but with the new job and just family life as a whole, I haven't had the time. So, fired her up and drove her back to my lock up on trade plates. I now have to clean out the damn thing and start refitting the interior!!! Then it's some new suspension, brakes and service. Then she can have an MOT and get some tax, ready for the meets!! Will be going the lock up tomorrow to start ferrying the interior down there, so will grab some pics for you all to see the finished product :)

He's a talented guy. The paint suppliers are sh17 hot too. He uses M&P paint in Saltney. We ordered some Rhapsody blue for a Bentley and they where cock on. The reason I add this is because Bentley never made a car in rhapsody blue, it was a rolls royce colour, and the guys at M+P knew this, moral of the story, "a painter is only as good as his paint". I like Barry, so any work I can send his way the better. Top bloke!!

Well, great start to a busy week!!! Bottom N/S slider pin seized in the carrier, applied some pressure and snap!! So goes to get one from the scrappers and they where all the same, luckily one of them freed off. Then the discs.......they where solid, stuck fast, no budging at all. My advice when changing you discs, apply copious amounts of copper grease to the hub, unlike the last person to do them on this car!!! So, with some swearing and bleeding, I got them off, only to find they sent me solid discs instead of vented!!!! I have given up for today, cos I will end up pushing it into the street for sale lol. I am waiting for my new slide pin kit and new pad sliders and then it's time for test :hmm: On a plus note, the cat is back on and the sliders and callipers are all painted and ready to fit, so not the least productive day in the world :)

Good news is that rimmers do a slider pin kit, with new pins and rubber boots for £30, so with the brand new callipers, discs and pads and refurbed carriers, the brakes and hubs are all tip top :) I am praying the rears pass the MOT, cos they will have to wait until next pay day ;)

Just on a plus note, using mgrorg25 at euro car parts meant that a front calliper is just £39!!

Thats good to know as one of mine let fluid past as I pushed the piston back, its ok now but I want to replace it at the next pad change

What I do Al is, order it online, add the code and reserve and collect in your nearest store. This way you can take your old calliper in with you and don't have to pay the surcharge ;)

With the new callipers, and all the suspension sanded and painted, it's coming on a treat :)

Good news and bad news today. All my brake parts are right, after the mix up with euro car parts website (and me not reading the description properly lol) but went to pick up the s/s shims and they haven't arrived yet :yikes: So still not got the front brakes back together, 5 days out of 10 wasted!! Having to put the rear seatbelts in, even though the back seat isn't in yet due to new MOT regs!!! And she should be in for test tomorrow, should these shims arrive ;)

Shims came, brakes are back together and working, new fluid, callipers, discs, pads and shims, so that's that! Will get onto the rears next month. All the interior is back in, excluding roof lining and she is in for MOT @ 9:00 in the morning!! Here goes lol

Well guys, to cut it short she PASSED!!!! 2 advisories, 1 slightly corroded rear brake pipe (Duncan showed me the pipe, nothing a bit of emry paper and hammerite can't mend) and a weepy front shock!! Getting some coilovers anyway, so again coming on nicely. Tomorrows diary consists of the PO for tax and the valet man coming to give the inside a good shampooing and engine bay a power clean!!!

He's not free though lol and cheers guys. Had an inspection of her yesterday, and couldn't find much. I had to do a temp repair to the wiring to get the number plate lights working and I had a rear fog light out. So we are rolling for Saturday's event!!

It does lol. The more you rummage the more you find. I am one of them too, if I see it, and know it's there, I have to do it!! It bugs the hell out of me otherwise lol

Just added a samco hose and chrome ally pipe to the throttle body and brought the K&N down to a colder place, £49 well spent at tweeks :)

So had to employ the services of the wife ;).......for the car!! I did say the next pic would be of it taxed, so I will upload that one first and then some clean picks. Haven't polished it as I didn't have the time :(

It's very good, but it has the odd real minor blemish. You will get to see her in the flesh tomorrow and see if it's worth the journey time. I think it is, but that's my view. Most people won't see any marks, but you know how it is when your up close and polishing the lady lol
