Looking good mate
Have you used longer bolts for the front. I take it you used spacers on the front after fitting the brakes. I want some longer bolts but not sure where to source some.
Also, is it a pig of a job to replace them

Well done Adam. good job, will be good to see it painted and fitted. Next ditch the ABS and perspex windows and take out the wiring loom and remove all the redundant wiring, lose loads of weight.

Yep, longer studs and spacers up front. They were a bit of a pig to fit into the hubs, especially to get them seated properly.
Finished the underside of the bonnet today and made a nice little carbon finisher to cover the hole left by the bonnet catch...

Couldn't you have used the holes of the foglights (with some ducting) to get more flow through the radiator?
Couldn't you have used the holes of the foglights (with some ducting) to get more flow through the radiator?
The rad gets plenty of air, especially as when the number plate is taken off there are a series of holes behind it to improve airflow and no centre pillar (there are photos somewhere earlier in this thread).
The original plan was to use the holes for ducting to the brakes, but there just physically isn't enough room to run ducting adequately, so the simple answer was to just blank them off.

I indeed saw those pics when I first read the whole thread....that's also why the question popped up in my head.
Any other way to get more cooling air to the brakes?? Do they get so hot they need it or is it just "in case"? Maybe you can get the superfluous wheelcovers from the F1, they are not allowed to use them anymore. ;-D
Unfortuantely not, there's just no room to get the pipework in there at the right angle to be of any use. Do they need it.....well they do get very hot so it wouldn't have hurt, but we'll just have to see how it goes.
All the mods are now done for some trackdays for this year now, so here's some pics of the new splitter and spoiler extension for you all....

Great work Adam & TDR :beer2:
Love the extra rear spoiler but not to keen on the splitter but i'm sure it will do what it's suppose to do and give you a better ride.

Avandia class action lawsuit (http://www.classactionsettlements.org/lawsuit/avandia/)
Mini update, no pictures I'm afraid.
After blowing up two Stack electronic oil pressure gauges we decided to switch to a Stack mechanical gauge.
I must say it's a lot better than the electronic version, gives a much clearer reading of what's happening. Also very easy to fit and route the tubing through the bulkhead so the gauge sits exactly where the electronic one sat :D

How much does the car weigh after all the mods? How much does a BRM weigh as standard?
As standard they're 1049kg iirc, ours is definitely under 1000kg now but haven't managed to get it on a weigh bridge yet :(

I have the BRM, Addition to the 200 owners manual, which says "Approximate unladen vehicle weight (full fuel tank, including sunroof but excluding air-coditioning). 1100kg."
I work for a very large re-cycling company and we have two weigbridges which are calibrated every three months. So I filled up the (absolutely standard excluding air conditioning) car and weighed it on both bridges, and it weighed........1100kg on the nail!
Without fuel it would be,
1100kg - 37kg ( the weight of 50 litres of fuel) = 1063kg
But I can't see many people driving around with no fuel in the car for obvious reasons, so I suppose for all practical purposes the road weight is going to around 1080 kg.
I also weighed it front and rear, front 680kg, rear 420kg. This is 62% front 38% rear, which is not good.
Have you any idea about how much weight you will have saved by taking the sunroof out?

Interesting figures I might give mine a go at work as well. ( also work for a large recycling company in East London with said weighbridge)
Is Yours standard???

Very interesting. I'd love to weigh the track car and definitely find out the front/rear balance. In fact we were talking about this the other day at the unit when we took the boot off the scrapped BRM and felt the weight of it. Decided that it would actually help balance the car.

welshone,
Yes, absolutely standard.
Adam,
What about the weight of the sunroof?

Dont know if I can find a means to weigh it but I have the complete sunroof in storage at work.its not that heavy though

Alan,
Did you take your sunroof out, what sort of job was it?
Fast Alan
03-09-2011, 09:30 PM
I didnt got it of Adam, but its not that hard once the head lining is removed you have 4 drain holes to unclip pipes from, the wiring to the motor and around 4-6 bolts holding the entire thing up,then it can come down in on big piece

Alan,
I suspect that's the easy bit. What do you have to put in to make it a non-sunroof car?
Nobrainer
03-10-2011, 09:31 AM
A large piece of glass. Preferably with a motor so you can open it like a window

You could fabricate some metal and with some welding and a bit of bodywork lose the hole from outside, then you could get some head lining material and recover the inside -hole,depends how good you want the finish,or if your losing weight for your Track days the inside wont really mater, would just be the expense of getting the roof resprayed

Alan,
If you look on page 5 of this thread you will see the strengthener they are going to use from the donor car. Page 7 shows the nearly finished article, but unfortunately no explanation of what you do to get from page 5 to page 7. The roof is a complex double curve, so you need to get things right or it will look terible. If you buy a donor car with no sunroof, but the right colour headlining then you have all the bits you need.
I need instructions Adam, where are you?

Yes best wait for Adam as nobody else can help you,no doubt he will be along soon
I'm here :)
Replacing the sunroof with a metal plate is far far from an easy job. We did have a piece of roof from a donor car.....but....the roof is INCREDIBLY flimsy. Even with dad welding and me immediately cooling the welds the roof was starting to flex incredibly with the heat. In the end we just welded it completely, ground down the welds and reshaped the roof as best we could and then had to have a skim of filler over the top before respraying.
My advice if we were to do it again, firstly buy a car with a sunroof to begin with  otherwise cut the entire roof skin off the car and find a donor skin from a no-sunroof car and weld the entire thin on in the gullies. I can't gaurantee it wont still need filling again.

Won't the filler crack the first time the roof flexes?
Nah, it's been fine for all the track days we've done. Trust me though, there is NO flex in this car :D
pfgascoigne
03-20-2011, 07:31 PM
Oh yes there is! Forces centered around the suspension mounting points which tranfer to the whole shell. You can make a car shell stiffer (much stiffer in yours), but you can't totally prevent body flex.
Ah well, it's been fine so far and I'm not overly worried about it :)
Hi Adam,
What type of clutch do you used for trackday
If I remember rightly it was an ebc black diamond clutch we popped in there.
Is a 4 paddle plate or simple?
Just a simple clutch, hasn't let us down at all since it was put in and weve given it plenty of abuse.

Just read this from start to finish - simply an epic build. I thought a BRM couldn't be improved on!!
Thanks Ian. She needs some more tinkering but that'll come once the B is done.
Not updated this in ages.....
The car has been running fantastically for a couple of years now, numberous track days done and it's been great fun.
Main reason for the thread resurrection was to pop a couple of photos of the replced front splitter up. It was damaged loading onto the trailer...
