View Full Version : Track Car Picture Diary
Made a quick start the other day taking a few bits out and managed to get her up to TDR Restorations today for the major work to begin.
Centre console is all undone, just got to get the gearknob off to remove it entirely.
Looks sound underneath, probably better than my old car but hey ho. Here are the first few pics, will post more when the work continues but nothing going on till after christmas anyway, enjoy :D

Well the front seats from this one are going in my other one as they are a bit worn too unfortunately. I'm going to try and refurb mine though so they may be up for sale soon :D

Good start Adam i'm going to start mine on boxing day so will try to get some pictures up then. Have you ever removed the headlining? That's my first job as the sunroof leaks like a sieve so have to seal it. Most bits will be on this site for sale within the next few weeks if anyone is interested in anything.
Steve
Headlining is coming out just after christmas. In that small gap between christmas and new years we hope to have the interior completely out and the engine and gearbox removed :D

What's wrong with the engine and gearbox?
Crankshaft oil seals and the head gasket are gone. So going to dump the whole lot out and tear it down.
Probably ditch the VVC to be honest. Currently looking at Jenvey Throttle bodies, Emerald ECU, Piper cams, etc. :D

What bhp do you think you will get out of it?
Any ideas what weight you can shed from it?
I've just bought perspex to replace the windows but unsure how the back ones will fit.
Well that kit is estimated at 185bhp, but we'll probably do a few extra touches to the engine such as properly blueprinting it, porting, polishing, etc. I'd like to see near 200 but we'll see.
Weight I'm hoping we'll remove more than we put back in with the rollcage. Aircon is going as well as most of the dash, rooflining, etc. May keep the doorcards just for aesthetics but it depends if they fit around the cage as that comes first. Single bucket seat (may have 2 but thats under discussion). I'll get the scales out and weigh everything that we take out and compare it to what we put in.
Mind me asking where you got your windows from and how much? Can the rears not fit to the original mounts?

I got a quote from a firm of £ 185.00 plus £ 15.00 delivery for the windows I have got the name but it is on my works email. I will get it when I go back in on the 7th and send it to you. I managed to get some tinted pespex through work for free fortunately so I just need to cut it down and shape it which is why I am unsure if it will fit.
Going to attempt to de-orange the lights and spray the grill orange on Boxing day (and the few days after probably) then start to strip out all of the weight. Don't think i'm going to put a cage in it because they aren't required for track days and i'd imaginr they'll add a fair bit of weight.
Any ideas how to overcome the alarm if stripping out the interior??
That's so so, the name would be great thanks.
Maybe get some rear mounts from a scrap 200 and try and customise them to fit your windows?
The cage is purely for peace of mind, also good for some advertising to show what kind of work we can carry out ;)
Alarm shouldn't be a problem, just keep the volumetric sensors wired up near the roof. I'll experiment with them and let you know the best way to go forward with them. The SRS light will be a problem but as its having harnesses the pretensioners are going and the airbags are coming out. Probably just remove the SRS light bulb if it annoys me :D

Good plan.
I will try to keep updating photo's as the work progresses. Would be good to meet at a track day to see how the standard engine compares to yours.
When do you hope to have it finished?
Definitely, really cant wait to get her on track.
Hopefully not too long. Going to really crack into it this holiday. Got a customers car waiting to be finished so it cant take forever, hopefully a month at a very rough guess!

Well i'll see how it goes, but February is more likely to be honest.

Keep the green grill... they're faster!
Might be interested in a headlining? Was considering retrimming mine in black the other day
Here's a few pictures for you from Thursday, didn't get to work on her today but in tomorrow for some work on the engine.

looking good mate, did you have any trouble getting the gear knob off? what did you use to remove it? ive tried removing mine but it wont budge.
There's a secret to this. It appears that Rover used Loctite to secure the knob on. Heat it up with a heat gun till its hot enough to melt your hands, then simply unscrew it. Burns and hurts a lot but easy as pie :D

Looks like it is going really well Adam.
What are you going to do about the Sunroof? Re fit just the glass or plate over it?
I've fitted the perspex windows to the front which was much easier than I thought it would be. Can't decide whether to leave the window motors in or silicone the windows shut though.
Sunroof is being plated over. Cant be having a big hole in the roof :D
I'm leaving the window motors in and the standard windows for now as we want to keep her road legal.

Is it easy to just remove the sunroof motor whilst leaving the sunroof in place?
Can it be used manually after the motor has been removed? I was going to remove it and plate over the hole but it seems a lot of work when I could just leave the sunroof in............ Although the sunroof leaks like a sieve......
I'd plate over it, I know my golf sunroof was bloody heavy (even without the motor) and can imagine the rover isn't too much different!
You could leave the roof in place and just remove the motor, but as Dom said it does weigh a ton!

Autotests & Autosolos are great fun & cheap..........about £25 - £35 to enter.
Autotests - Don't recommend the serious ones as they are very, very tight, mind numbing and hard on the car (lots of 1st & reverse)........however, we organise some 'fun' ones which involve no reversing with reasonably simple tests around cones and through plastic 'gates'. You have to run with a passenger which makes it a great laugh and they can point out the way to go (or generally take the P out your driving!!)
Autosolos are generally longer, faster more flowing tests similar to above. However, you're on your own in the car so you need to pay a little attention to where your supposed to go.
The great thing about both is that you do not need a specialist car to do well (one of our members uses his bog standard everyday roadcar - Fiat Punto 1.2 and embarasses fully rally prepared MK2 Escorts etc), the driver is far more important so don't worry about being up against more powerful cars. Cars are put into classes anyway to try to keep things even.
Anybody wanting more specific details please feel free to PM me.

I was sad looking at the car being pulled apart the I saw it had a green nose so that made me feel better. He He He
Little update but no pictures I'm afraid.
The most important thing arrived yesterday, the V5. Looks as though i'm the 8th owner of the wee BRM now, was quite shocked it had that many to be honest.
Another goodie arrived this morning in the form of two shiney new wing badges :D Very happy about getting hold of these after intercepting them on an ebay auction a few weeks back.
Spraying of the front parts is going well, the grill is now orange again and just needs lacquering. Fog surrounds are done but not green ;) Upper grill is half way through coats of sparkle silver along with the front bumper strips, which were a bit worse for wear and one was chrome :slap:
Front bumper has had the damaged areas rubbed down and is awaiting touching up. The ZR spoiler is halfway through painting, just needs the hoop doing in orange now.
Metal has arrived for the rollcage! New rear lights have arrived.
So all in all its progressing rather well :D

Must be something to do with the BRM mate i'm the 8th owner of mine.
I'll put some photo's of mine on tomorrow as it's too dark to get any decent ones.
Still need to finish treating the rust and get the topcoat of orange done.
How is the engine work going?
Not tackled the rust on mine yet, its on the long to do list.
Engines coming apart slowly in between other work. Its a mess though, the waterways are full of what can best be described as jelly. Much worse than when the head went on my other BRM.
And guess what.....the timing was a tooth out :slap: Took the cover off and the pulleys just don't line up, was a proper bodge job whoever put it back together before. By the looks of things they took it apart, got fed up half way through and just slapped it back together any old how.
Hey ho, it'll be soooo much better when its rebuilt :D

Are you still hoping for a Feb finish or have you pushed it back?
Late Feb maybe but it really does need finishing as there's an MGC waiting for the lift. Using every spare moment I have to work on it at the moment.
Been a while with no progress updates as I've swapped phones and been busy with new job, so here's a taster for you all of how fars she's come....

Question.. from all the weight you got out of the car, and then putting the rollcage in etc, How much weight (if any) do you actually save when u strip everything out?
..just curious :)
We're actually working that out but you'd be suprised what comes out. The sound proofing alone was 2 stone 10 lbs and we weighed just the rear seat fold down section (just the part of the seats that go behind your back is you sit in the rear) and that alone was 3 stone.
Going to weigh the other seat part later, but its a hell of a lot.
More work today and the rollcage is essentially finished. Only the cross members for the drivers side, harness bars and mroe gussetting to do now.
Anyhoo here are some piccies....

are you planning on crashing this??
Nope :p
But its better to be safe than sorry, plus its good promotion for the business.
Been a while with little progress but cracked on with some difficult parts after the last few days!
Coilovers arrived :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e158/brm_ski/Rover%20BRM%20Track%20Car/001-2.jpg
They're now fitted on the rear, got to make some camber plates to get the fronts on correctly though.
Next was a lot of time spent making the dash fit. Its been gutted in the middle of all the vent arrangement which will be replaced with some strategically placed ducting. Reason being the bar across the front goes straight through the middle of the dash, was a bitch to fit but hey ho. Its about 95% done now, just needs some fettling to slip in easy....

New rear discs, yellow stuff pads and rear coilovers. You can also see where we redid some of the undersealing on the rear, partly due to it coming away over time with rust underneath and partly due to heat from welding inside.

Not going to upgrade the brakes to the MG ZR 160 fronts and rears?
whilst you're bleeding cash, you may as well go for the tarox 300mm brake kit, that'll fit under the 16's :D
whilst you're bleeding cash, you may as well go for the tarox 300mm brake kit, that'll fit under the 16's :D
That's a cunning plan. And if they fit will be a bonus as we've been finding most big brake kits don't fit :(
Will look into it....
That's what I found, was thinking of upgrading the brakes but in no way did I want to lose the wheels... I'm sure it was tarox who did the kit... Certainly wasn't AP racing, they were too mahoosive!

holy smoke, whats the actual, plan with this adam? complete track beast, it must be setting you back a real whack, for all that work. Will be awsome once its done.
Small update for today, doesn't look like we've done a lot but the cage is all in now :D
Only a few more welds on the drivers side to do but the car needs wheeling out again for that. Seatbelt bars are in place, sunroof is fully welded up, front suspension is on with camber plates (loads of camber ;) ). Still got new brake lines to fit and rub down the entire interior, I started but its a very time consuming job, still its coming along well. Here are the pics from today.....
New brake lines :D

Well the straights will just be for slick tyres as needed something larger, they're 17". It'll still be running the standard (and far better looking ;) ) cosmos' on the road.

I've explained before in the thread but simply put, the car was a dog!
It had previously been shunted front and rear, the bodywork was awful and riddled with rust. The engine was completely knackered, I could actually fit a scalpel through the gap where the headgasket was.
To put it simply this car was destined for the scrap yard. In my humble opinion I have actually saved it to give it another lease of life. Ok it won't be your typical BRM, but when its done it will still pay homage to its BRM pedigree and history.
Besides if your looking to cast blame on people for destroying BRM's i think you should start with the many perfectly good working examples that are simply broken for spares on Ebay because they can't sell them easily.

Mini update from the last few weeks, but no piccies unfortunately.
The boot lid is back on, rear quarter windows are in and the rear lights are in, pretty much finishing the rear apart from the spoiler.
Wiring loom is back in and mostly connected, managed to run the rear half of it inside the body to keep the interior tidy. Rear washer pipe is also hooked back up and now running hidden throughout the car. Interior panels we made to cover the holes on the sides are in on one side. Heater unit is now all in place, that was a bitch of a job getting it around the roll cage.
Also put grommits EVERYWHERE to cover up all of the holes that are usually covered over by carpet!
Will try and get some more pics next weekend when the dash should be going back in :D

after doing a track day on sat and having so much fun think i'll go down this route just not so colpletely, adam are you fitting a bucket seat? if so where are you sourcing frame from.
and what are you doing suspension wise if coilovers are on your daily runner?
Have put the seat and suspension info somewhere in this thread but basically its as follows:
Seats are 2 Corbeau Pro Series in red, the frames were bought with the seats but we cut out the original cross members and fitted 2 new tubular braces in place of the original pieces, these have the mounting bolt points sunk into them and welded in so there not going anywhere. They're also lower than the original mounting points so a lower centre of gravity for the whole car.
Suspension is a set of race spec Gaz GGA Gold coilovers. 22mm pistons at the front are immense, coupled with custom made camber plates will give completely adjustable suspension set up for better cornering.
All this work is by TDR restorations and I can't fault the quality!

Very nice. They put out some wonderful shells, all seam welded. Would've loved one of them to base this project on but they're a bit too pricey.
Are you selling them Cosmos alloys when you put the new ones on adam?
Afraid not matey. The straights will be shod with slicks so need the cosmos' at the moment to use for road tyres.
Mini update!
Pockets are a lot lighter but just acquired most of the engine bits today. VVC blanking kit, Piper 285 cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omega forged pistons, modified con-rods, Jenvey throttle bodies and Emerald ECU combined with associated gubbins such as specialised con-rod bolts, etc.
Still got some more bits to get such as clutch and exhaust system and finish the porting of the head, which was hardness tested today and is all pukka in that respect! Then have it all balanced and put it all back together, so getting there.

lol, adam..... are u rich? lol or is there a credit card with extinguisher on stand-by ;)
This is eye candy for any k-series owner!!
What sort of power are you expecting with all the mods?
This is exactly with i'd be doing with my engine rebuild if i had the spare cash!
Keep up the good work adam
No idea on power output but the build has now hit a metaphorical 'speedbump'.
We're getting the steel crank, but to have it balanced and the main reground it'll probably take too long to be ready in time for the NEC :(
The airbox also needs modification (carbon fibre elise jobby), so that'll take a wee while to sort someone that can do the appropriate carbon fibre work on it.
Some of the latest pictures I've taken......
Changed the rear lights back to standrad from the Trophy lights that I did have on..

this definitely falls into the category of BRM smut .
Cheers matey, its certainly coming along slowly but surely.
Mini update... (no pics)
Exhaust arrived from Janspeed. Full system with sports cat. Unfortunately couldn't stump for a custom manifold, just hope this wont restrict it too much as the primaries aren't really the ideal length, but needs must I suppose.
On a side note the manifolds from Janspeed aren't stainless steel anymore, apparently they had a lot of problems with them and it led to them cracking, they had to be re-worked a few times. So if you have a stainless manifold from JS its actually pretty rare!
Mini update.....
Steel crank now back from being balanced so the engine rebuild can begin at last :mml::mml:

I've seen mgf VVC's with PPX viper, ported head (by dave andrews), piper reprofiled exhaust cam, exhaust,... so less then yours with 170 - 185 bhp
then you have the Jenvey's, the internals,...

Lots done today, not as much as we wanted but still fair progress! Here's some pics I took today for your viewing pleasure....
A few examples of the bits that needed making to get the throttle bodies to fit perfectly, first up a weeny T piece to hold the throttle cable (the supplied part is a bolt and nuts that don't fit), its the shiney piece at the end of the rotor arm and will allow the cable to stay straight as it rotates in the hole in the arm as the arm moves through its arc...

Very nice!
I wanted the oval Janspeed box but was told that they only did the twin pipe version! What car is that from? Mine does stick out a long way!
The exhaust is actually an MG ZR160 unit. The only thing that needs changing is a bracket on the cat section needs removing and re-welding to fit and a blank for the extra sensor hole.
Although you should be able to buy the backbox for a Rover 200vi which they did in twin 3" rolled in, twin 3" slash cut and single oval, unless they've stopped making them now which I'm not too sure about.
Was a veeeeeeery long day today at the unit, but she's getting so much closer to being finished!

bloody exiting!! not long now!! got any ideas of how to show the car off for the first time? top gear should have another look at the NEW BRM-TDR!!!!! doing a great job adam!
Cheer guys. Not sure how to show it off. I'd like to take it to the Fast Show in March, although would have to clear it with the old man as it is a joint project. Will have to have a BRM specific meet though, more than likely at a track day :D

Running a bit rough at the moment as its only got a base map and I'm yet to fettle the idle for the throttle bodies, but that'll be a job for next weekend. The main thing is that she's up and running!! :mml:

Well that's about it till Monday. She's done apart from the mapping!
Wheels refurbed and on, tyres (went for Toyo Proxes T1-R in the end for the road) on, shorter coilover springs to clear the suspension from the wheel and that's the lot. All done and she's ready to go. Also gave her a good wax today...

192.7bhp and 145 lb/ft of torque so we're very very happy!!!! :D
Speaking to DW the postioning of the K-series in the bubble shape (transversely) restrcits power due to having a long exhaust. He said that if this engine was fitted to a Caterham with a shorter exhaust and in its current state of tune it would easily see over 200bhp.

A small update for you all....
Wanting some stiffening of the front end we had a look at the strut braces available to buy and decided that they're all pretty naff and not really up to the job. So steps had to be taken, metal had to be cut and a custom brace was created in-house. In addition, from the track day we found that we wanted more adjustment over the camber at the front and as such have made up some completely new suspension turrets for the car. That's right, you've never seen these before on a bubble shape :D
Anyhoo, here are some pics for your viewing enjoyment...

A weeny bit of fettling today on the TDR BRM to sort out a few bits before the next track day.
Firstly the rear view mirror was pretty crap to be honest as the roll cage covered a large part of the rear view and the harnesses prevent you checking blind spots. Therefore a different rear mirror was required.
Old mirror removed...

The other issue shown from the last track day was the lack of air to the radiator, not good when you need all the cooling you can get. Previously you've seen the bumper was modified a bit, but the upper grill needed modifying to get the air through to the top of the radiator more, therefore an 'open mouth' grill was obtained.
Grill before...

But what colour to have the new grill?
We though about Sparkle Silver like the old grill, but hey, this is a track machine :D
Voila...

This is hard for me to explain, there is a lot for love and envy for you at the same time.
oh balls to it marry me, just so i can get a go in the car..!
credit to you and your dad, boy do i need that payrise!
Looks strangely like a big fish Ian!
Cheers Dan. It is a great project, but as far as marriage goes, I think both our missus' would have something to say about that :D

looking great!
maybe thought to paint the silver details ( mirrors and side-strips) also in orange? or would that be too much?
Cheers Gerald.
We did think about painting the other silver bits orange, but thought it may be a bit too much.

May I suggest some sponsors:

If only Orange would sponsor the car, it'd have even more goodies :D
Mini update...My wee spin on the last trackday caused a bloming awful noise from the car. Originally thinking it was the tyres just flat spotted didn't think much more of it until the wheels were changed over and the noise was still there. Thought it must be a driveshaft problem, can you get a passenger side driveshaft easily? No. But after a few phone calls found a local scrappy that had some in stock.
Well after going to the scrappy this morning to pick up a new driveshaft (turned into me having to butcher a 200vi to get one of the right type) it turns out that the driveshaft wasn't the problem at all.
After a bit of head scratching and convincing ourselves it wasn't the gearbox or diff causing the noise we decided to strip down the hub and check the wheel bearing. Had originally discounted the wheel bearing as there was no actual 'play' in the wheel, but once it was all apart this was revealed....

Looks as though my little spin had literally forced the bearings into the casing causing large indents which in turn caused the wonderful noise. Fingers crossed new bearing arrives by Tuesday and the track day for Thursday is game on! :D

thats a bit nasty m8, what was the sound like exactly? My car has developed a kinda scratchy/friction type noise coming from the off-side front when under hard acceleration or cornering - was thinking drive shaft but now your little discovery has got me thinking!
It was a grinding sort of sound that increased frequency with speed. Gear changes didn't have any effect on the sound, nor did clutching, so gearbox was ruled out. Also it disappeared when turning left, so pointed towards the bearing.

mine is very similar, when braking, changing gear or rolling the sound goes but comes back with a very sharp turn left and acceleration. There is no play in the wheel like yours but obviously that is not a sure sign.
Looks like new front wheel bearings for me then when i come back from holiday!
Fixed!!!!!
Track day on Thursday here we come :mml:
Well today I was getting narky with Rovers silly coolant temperature gauge, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot in a sauna so I decided to do some tinkering...
Here's a useful hole...

Need to get a water temp sensor on mine. Had one on my last bubble, much better than the standard jobbie!!!
Have already started the aluminium holder for it so better get a gauge bought me thinks. How much was that one if you dont mind me asking??
Honestly can't remember the price, but bought it with the oil temp and pressure gauges.
Looooooong time no update, but with Christmas mostly done and the new year beckoning more track action work has started again on the track car.
First job was sorting some new stopping power since we basically lunched a set of yellow stuff pads on our 3 track days. Dad was happily tinkering away in the workshop making spacers and brackets to get these new beauties to fit....

Show us your brackets!
Nice work - was there much buggeration involved in making the TVR brakes fit? Any clearance issues to the 17" wheels?

Bit small aren't they??

Haven't got any bracket pictures unfortunately. They required some delicate measuring and spacers needed for the wheels, also longer hub studs as the original ones are too short really.
Clearance is fine with the wheels, the spacers give just enough room for the callipers.
Bit small aren't they??
:)
I guess so :p

What size were on previously? 262mm or 282mm?
They were the original size, the 262mm's.

To fit those calipers the discs would be 330mm dia. The same as used on some of the touring cars
More little jobs done/in progress today.
While I went about losing weight from the car, Dad was knocling up some camber plates for the rear. The drivers door was attacked and the rear wiper is now gone to the scrapyard in the sky (well the big bits box in the unit) so a total of 8lbs from those bits. Passenger door will wait till the weather gets a bit nicer and we can get her outside.
Anyhoo....

A little more work done on the car today in losing a bit more weight. Decided the bonnet needed some lightening, it's now sitting in primer ready for a top coat next week, but here are a couple of pics from today...
