That sounds like the 'BRAKE' pad wear sensor scraping on the disc. You need some new pads.

or the handbrake cable has seized and you've run out of shoe...

Time to get the spanners out!

I've had a rear calliper seize on my first BRM, looks like the new one had a similar issue as it has a new rear caliper on it too so this could be a common problem.

As to how much you should be able to do it for under £100 all in I would've thought.

is it that. the squeel was intermittant. when i pull away its like ur taking the handbreak off even tho its already off. if that makes sense

Could be matey. A decent mechanic should be able to tell you if its seized or not.

Isn't it ATS or something that do free inspections?

Just jack it up, take the wheel off and get someone to pull on and off the handbrake whilst you're at the calliper making sure the cable and calliper are moving. Get a Haynes manual, it'll show you how to do it, the manual for the 200 will suffice as it doesn't cover the BRM, but the brakes are the same as on any ABS equipped 200.

I had a seized caliper on my MX5 last year. Easy to test, just jack it up, turn the handbrake off, then see if you can turn the wheel, it should go round easy enough. If not then you prob need a new caliper.

is the handbrake on the caliper or does it have shoes inside the disk?

ah, I dunno on the R200. On my '5 the handbrake was on the caliper...

The handbrake works via an oval pinion that forces the pad onto the calliper. They usually seize. New callipers aren't expensive; I bought a pair for my 200 Cabriolet just over a year ago and I think they were about £40 each exchange, maybe less.
