Sounds like the bearings have gone on my ZR alternator. Do you think this sounds right on a car with just over 20k on the clock??
Would've thought it'd last more than 20k.
Are you sure its the alternator, I had a whine and it turned out to be the clutch rather than the water pump/alternator etc

I have had the clutch whine before on my R400. Not quite the same.
The place that have serviced it tell me it's that. £300 for a new one fitted. I could do it myself but if I then find it's not that I will be £150 or so out of pocket and no better off.
