A must do mod for any BRM owner is the replacement of the standard 48mm plastic throttle body for either a 48mm or 52mm alloy throttle body (tb). The standard plastic tb is prone to sticking and can cause annoying problems when driving around in towns.

The replacement of the original tb to an alloy one is a very simple operation and can be accomplished in approximately 20 minutes. The tb can be seen in this picture just after the elbow in the intake pipe…

Firstly disconnect the two tubes and the sensor clip that plug into the tb and detach the throttle cable from the far side as well. Remove the intake elbow and the tb is now ready to be removed. Its an easy job of undoing the four bolts that hold the tb in place with a socket.

Fitting the new tb is simply a reverse of the procedure above, with care being taken when re-attaching the throttle cable to ensure that it is not too loose or tight.

The end results will not see an increase in power but will free-up the response of the throttle a bit more and with the 52mm will provide a slightly better airflow on the intake side of the engine.

I bought my tb from Mike Satur

Is this what is holding back the VVC engine over the 160 BHP in later TF and ZR160's?

Why do early VVC only put out 145BHP?

Its part of the problem. The 160's also have slightly different cam profiles and a slightly different head design to unleash those extra horses.

Adam, maybe a clean up of your engine, might be at cause!

I know you have been meaning to do it for a while, but you should clean it

Also i spot a bit of rust below the battery

silly adam, needs to have his engine bay cleaned up doesnt he :chair:

I'm fitting a 52mm tomorrow, is there anything I need to watch out for, like re-adjusting cable tension?

Not really Jon. If it idles high after fitting it then you'll need to do the reset sequence, other than that its easy as pie.

OK, this is done, was easy to fit, but cable tension was WAY out. All sorted now.

Glad you found it easy mate. Its a good mod! You've probably found out already but the little plastic square can be turned to slacken/unslacken (is that a word) the cable.

I have a 52mm TB and an ITG Maxogen induction kit in a box in the garage. I was going to put it on the ZR (105) but it might wait and see if I ever get around to buying a BRM to play with.

Theres a little plastic square that clips into a metal bracket on the TB. Unclip this and turn it (I forget which way) and it tightens or slackens the cable.....tada!!
