View Full Version : Engine knocking/Noise
Hi Guys
Well my ongoing constant problems with the k-series contine!
Jumped in the car today and was greeted with a loud knocking/griding noise on turnover. The engine idles fine but when reved the noise gets louder, i took the car up the road to see if it would settle itself but no joy.
The car pulls fine but definitely a major problem somewhere, the noise is at its worst when the revs start to fall.
I blipped the engine from the throttle body with the bonnet open, the noise seems to be coming from the head, maybe cams or vvc mech or somthing.
I when down to my mechanic and the earliest he can have a look is friday, he said don't drive the car, which i think is good advice lol
Anyone heard of anything like this before? the oils never been run dry and the HG is fine.
I'll really starting to wonder if the fun i get from the car is worth the problems
Thanks John

mine has slight knock from vvc mech and thrust bearing in the clutch seems to be going, get a screw driver and put the tip on the engine and the handle to your ear gives you a good indication of the noise and where its worst them sumise from there.
I got my car back from the gardge today, 65 quid later and he tells me the vvc mech is gone, they can't fix it, i need a new head!
Does anyone know if the 160 head will fit our mk1 vvc engines?
Wheres the best place to get a decent head from? i've had a look on ebay but i'm a bit sceptical of buying something like that from there.
I need all the running gear included cams, vvc mech etc..
cheers

The ZR160 head will fit all you will need to do is change a couple of sensors, ebay is probably the cheapest way of getting a new head, as the mechs on there own from the dealers are very expensive.

Cheers dan, think im gonna try and find a cheap 160 head on ebay.
I can get it fitted for not much money.
I like the idea of the aa breakdown! I would go for it but the car runs ok at the minute its just the noise, them vvc mechs churning themselfs up, sounds like gears grinding!
The ZR160 head will fit all you will need to do is change a couple of sensors
Do you know what sensors are diffrent on the heads richard? Might me handy to know so i can have all the right parts when i go down to my mechanic
Cheers for your help guys its really aprishiated

I think it is the brown sensor on the vvc plunger housing but if you take the 160 head down with your head then the mechanic will be able to swop them over easy enough.

I wish you the best of luck with everything. After all, our cars were neighbours at the plant.

hi just an update on this...
Turns out i had the vvc knock of death, vvc mech on cams 1 & 2 where totaly shot. Its more documented then i first though, causes are mainly stressing the engine when the oil isnt up to temp!
I mangned to get a hold of a 160 cylinder head from a ZR160 for £150, i heard the car running before it was removed so i know its tip top.
My local machanic was going to charge £250+ just to change the head, thats not including spark plugs, strech bolts etc..
I thought this would be fause economy, as the car needs a few other bits like a new radiator and a PRT that will need to be fitted at one point or another.
So i've desided to put the car off the road for a while and do the job myself, replacing old parts as i go, anything to keep the old girl from the scrap man!
Driving a few other cars over the last few weeks (including some desiels) has made me realize what a mint little car the brm is!

Wish me luck!
Good luck fella!
At least doing it yourself you know the work done will be top notch. Well done for spending some dosh on her to keep her on the road.
Hi guys
Im planning on putting my engine back togetter the next sign of good weather as i now have all the new parts.
I've just taken delivery of the new Multi-Layer Steel Gasket, with it i recived instructions to torque the head down to 20Nm + 180o +180o.
Does anyone know if this is the correct setting as i read somewhere that a torque setting of 30Nm +180 +180 should now be used?
I have also some new SS exhaust studs, i need to find the torque for these, i guess they will be the same as the orignals but for the life of me i can't find my haynes manual! :chair:
Has anyone one to hand to check for me? i'd be most grateful

Hi guys
Just an update as not been on for a while
All work went well, the head went on with no problems and installed a MLS HG, PRT and new radiator at the same time, all the jobs only took 4 hours.
http://pic70.picturetrail.com/VOL1900/9404981/20203801/343517472.jpg
The engine started first time and was running perfect till about 3 weeks ago when i heard a massive clunk in second gear, i lost all drive and couldn't engage any gear. I was just around the corner from my house so manged to coast home.
Looks like the clutch or gearbox is knackered, i'm gutted as the work replacing the head cost me nearly £1000 not 2 months ago. I said to myself while fitting the head that if anything else went wrong with the car i would get rid.
SO I've bit the bullet and went German... well Spanish, just bought this...

Miltek Turbo Back sports Cat exhaust
Stage 2 remap @ 245bhp
Believe it or not it costs me less to insure this than the rover and its twice as fast!
I've now convinced myself its a good idea to keep the BRM, i got offered £300 for a part exchange and that's silly money, Im open to sensible offers if anyone wants it, just anything to keep her from the scrapper!
The MOT was due in October it'll pass on everything else but the gearbox noise, it's still got 2 months tax left so that should give me time to get a gearbox from somewhere! anyone know of one for sale?
It does go into gear now and drives but the noise is unbearable!

Poor thing, if it was any other car it would have been on the scrap heap months ago but i just can't do it, its just too good!
Please dont break her!! After seeing all the interest at the weekend it'd be almost criminal as so many people are after them!

such a shame - nice 1 for not scrapping her!! Some1 will have and fix her back up!
Well I'm gonna give the old girl an ultermatem.
I'm gonna spend some cash fitting the new gearbox, some cosmos, a new clutch and an exhaust my mates selling off his ZR with a sports cat, and if one more thing goes wrong i'm gonna drive it off a cliff lol

Keep an eye on this one if it ever goes for sale - by the sound of things 75% of parts fitted will be new!
Well done for keeping her going.

Which is the sensible thing to do..
There are noumouros PG1 boxes on ebay and about on Forums, and as per wht Adam said - could have sold that 3times over at the wkend.
Just as a point of interest - wht did you think the 160 head gave you extra?

dont try to get the drive shafts out of the gearbox, split them at the inboard end then remove the gearbox then get the rest of the drive shaft out of the gearbox on the bench, its much easier that way
And with a very incisive post, welcome to the site
Hi guys
Well another £650 later and ive finally got the car sorted, turns out the flywheel had removed its self from the crank, new flywheel and clutch where needed.
Ive decided to get it MOTed and taxed and put it up for sale, the only reson being that i would like to spend some money on my cupra rather than on the plans i had for the rover.
Its had nearly £2000 spent on it in the 100 miles and all the works top notch.
I'll post a list of the work done, pics and a price after the MOT, but if anyones intrested just drop me a PM.

Nice Cupra, don't see may Cupra R Ibiza's and must be great to drive. Recently swapped my BRM in for a Octavia vRS 20v turbo. Love how easy it is to get power gains compared to the VVC.
