Ageing tyres

    I've had a very close call on the weekend with a high speed blowout. Plenty of tread left on the tyre but has been on the wheel for many years.

    Big noise, close to total loss of control but just managed keep things pointing in the right direction. Just glad that no-one got hurt and my trusty chariot is unharmed. Could have been nasty if there was another vehicle nearby. My own fault and a bit of a wakeup call.

    Check your old rubber and be careful - don't want anyone to have a near miss.... or worse.

    Have a look at the state of this bad boy.

    Not punctured from outside in - blew from inside out on the sidewall.

    Not long done my Hillman Imp... Like you said, plenty of tread but...... Changed them due to age. Good heads up info.

    The age of my tyres were pointed out to me at the mot and I replaced them not a safety issue but I took his advice.

    Yes, we were having discussions on tyres in the office yesterday as it happens. RFV and conisity though, as our needs are somewhat different to a daily driver, but many years ago I was party to a tread separating company at VHS (Very High Speed = 150mph+). It took the entire rear wing off the car. I've also suffered a front blow out on my 7.5 truck so I understand your concerns. The reputable brand manufacturers tend to recommend replacement at circa 6 to 8 years regardless of tread remaining. There are several factors affecting this guideline. First is the environmental effect on tyres, from UV and Ozone which cause the rubber to start breaking down. The rubber gets harder as the oils and solvents are leached away over time. Ultimately they start cracking. this can then let moisture in to track round the structural components buried deep inside the tyre. Then there is the hoary question of previous use. People tend to forget that a tyre was previously punctured (or went down for other reasons - corroded wheel bead or leaky valve). This puts abnormal stresses into the tyre even when static which can result in structure failure which is what you appear to have suffered. How do you know the abuse history of a tyre on a recently bought car? Did the previous owner bump up and down kerbs? just once is enough to stress the tyre potentially, or a pothole? Then for us, who perhaps only use our cars sporadically its a well known phenomena that tyres will take a 'set' if left at normal inflation pressure for more than a week or so (especially in hotter weather). When you pull away the RFV will be massive for a mile or two until the tyre warms and regains it roundness - so yes tyres need warming up before they can give their best. So, if you are leaving your tyres on the car for lay up, I suggest you pump up to something like double normal pressure. I go to 60psi, and monitor for pressure loss weekly. If you are inclined to pull them off, I bag them if I know I wont want them for months, chuck in a VCI material and seal the bag. Store laying on its side at a moderate pressure and in a stable temp environment, 10°C is a good target.
